Hi, A funny thing happened. I downloaded ASUnit-2.7.alpha.zip from the mirror site (URL provided in the FlashCommm_chttyfig site and I got a message "corrputed file" when I attempted to open it. (I tried it from the NY and VA mirrors). I then went to your site and when I clicked the Download, I noticed that when the mirrors showed up, the file size was different and it downloaded and opened fine. Sorry for the dearth of documentation! Basically, take a look at AsUnit.as and how it instantiates TestCases for the framework. This is how it works now - any application that will host TestCases must extend TestRunner. For now, that means asunit.textui.TestRunner, but may (i= n the near future) include asunit.desktop.TestRunner or asunit.localconn.TestRunner... Once you've got that one, you just create TestSuites and TestCases as before. I have a xulrunner desktop application that will auto-create these for you if you're interested, but it's kind of strange and has even less documentation. I'll post it to sourceforge this week and let you know as soon as it's ready. Hit me up again if this wasn't much help - I've been drinking tonight. ;-) Thanks, Luke |

Hi guys, Just wondering - what is the current status of AsUnit in the Flash 8 IDE? I know that the JSFL commands on the version I've got (latest stable release, AFAIK) have problems, as there seems to be some version checking code which fails with this message: >> To use this feature, you must update your installation of Flash to Version 7.2 or greater. Go to http://www.macromedia.com/flash to find the updater. Not a huge problem, as I usually create these classes via Eclipse templates= . However, I'm not totally sure that the UI panel is connecting to the testsuite - none of my asserts are shouwing up, even though the identical setup works fine in MX 2004. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just a problem on my side somewhere? Cheers, Alias |

Hi Luke, That's cool :) I think it's definitely the way to go, at least for me, as I've found the window swf generally a bit unreliable, and having to switch between the flash IDE & Eclipse to check if my tests have passed is a bit counterproductive. I've actually asked about it on the MTASC list - Nicholas Canasse had this to say: >If I remember correctly I think usualy you call startDrag on an mc instanc= e > >mc.startDrag(false,0,.....) > >so there is no need for "target". So the issue is more to do with the Flash 8 compiler being strict in a different, slightly strange way. The other thing I noticed was that the dra= g parameters were getting switched around. I'm going to get the source and se= e if I can get it to work properly. I deployed my first properly unit tested class today, and I was surprised how well it turned out. If I get it working, where should I email the patch to? Hey Alias, As it turns out, you've discovered a feature that was baked into the very first builds of AsUnit and actually hasn't gotten any attention since! I was running into a bug in the Macro compiler that prevented that LocalOutputPanel from displaying properly. Rather than chasing it down, I just stopped development on it and left it sad and neglected for all this time. Fortunately, you have resurrected it at a perfect time! We will take a look at the sources and see what we can find to make that panel work properly. It's definitely *not* a bug in MTASC. In general, MTASC is stricter than MMC and forces one to actually write clean code - which that LocalOutputPanel probably isn't... If you're interested in inserting the fix yourself, please feel free to download the latest sources into your classpath from CVS at sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=3D108947) and submit a patch via email. We'll integrate it into the next build which should be coming out shortly! Thanks, Luke Bayes www.asunit.com |

Argh -
Further investigation seems to indicate that the compile errors are actuall=
y
due to some incorrect parameter specification in the intrinsics, and with
the modification I've made, the project now stops working in the Flash 8
compiler:
According to the flash 8 complier:
ScrollHandle.as: Line 24: startDrag requires 1 (target), 2 (target+lock) or
6 (target+lock+constraint) parameters.
This would suggest that the AsUnit code is actually correct, and the MTASC
compiler is wrong. I'll post this to the MTASC list and see if anyone has
any suggestions.
Cheers,
Alias

Hi guys,
Answering my own question:
I managed to get it working, by taking the following steps:
/**
* @author Alias
*/
import AllTests;
import com.asunit.controls.LocalOutputPanel;
class RunTests {
public static function main() : Void {
//set up stage to view correctly in FDT swf viewer
Stage.align =3D "TL";
Stage.scaleMode =3D "noScale";
//launch local output panel
var testInstance:LocalOutputPanel =3D LocalOutputPanel.getInstance(_root, 1=
);
Sys.println("Hello MTASC!");
//run test suite
var tests:AllTests =3D new AllTests();
}
}
Setting the swf launcher up, as per the FDT demo movie for MTASC Launcher:
See here: http://fdt.powerflasher.com/flashsite/flash.htm
(click MTASC Examples > MTASC Launcher > Demo #1
MTASC only complained about a couple of things:
- It couldn't find the Sys class - I suspect there are many better ways to
solve this, but I just copied Sys.as <http://Sys.as> from my configuration
folder to the root of my project
- It threw a type errors in:
in class:
com.asunit.controls.ScrollHandle
changed line 24
from:
startDrag(this, false, 0, _parent.upArrow._y, 0, _parent.getHandleTravel())=
;
to:
startDrag(false, 0, _parent.upArrow._y, 0, _parent.getHandleTravel());
in class:
LocalOutputPanel.as
Line 117
Change from:
startDrag(this);
to:
startDrag();
Then MTASC happily compiles (although there are a few unused import
warnings, nothing fatal).
This is with the latest alpha, release candidate by the way.
Hope someone find this useful,
Alias

Hi guys, I've been setting up my project's test suites to run with FDT and MTASC, an= d it's a really nice, tightly integrated workflow. However - what I'd really like to do would be to set up the Local Output console (which I only know about because I accidentally ran ASUnit's own tests) to show my test results - this would mean I only need to have one sw= f open in Eclipse - my main swf bult from MTASC. Is it possible to get this set up so that I don't have to compile in the flash IDE to see my test results? Even better would be ASUnit/FDT integration, so that it could display the test results and allow you to jump directly to the testcase of a failed tes= t - but I guess that's a request for the FDT guys :) Anyway - to recap - I want to create a testcase class which will launch the AsUnit local output panel, or if anyone has a better way of integrating ASUnit into Eclipse/FDT I'd love to hear about it, Thanks in advance, Alias |

Hey Mark, I just wanted to make the point that there is a huge distinction between UI testing and Unit testing. I have heard very compelling arguments against automated UI test fixtures and have seen competent development houses build quality software with more manual/scripted processes for testing their UI. Some of the main problems associated with automating this process have to do with how fragile these tests tend to be. Unlike unit tests, they tend to impede development and refactoring and by the end of a project and can often wind up being ignored because of their fragility. I should qualify these assessments with the fact that they are definitely anecdotal for me as I have never worked on a project with an automated UI test framework... On the other hand, there is no reason you can't build Unit tests for a Flex application if you're building components using ActionScript. You can make sure that your module does what it is supposed to do, and simply use MXML as the "glue" for a series of objects. If you find yourself wishing you had an automated test for an mxml entity, you should probably consider refactoring your application to put the complexity in a scripting language rather than the more declarative language of XML. Good luck, Luke Bayes www.asunit.com |

I have to admit - this is definitely a unique request! Does anyone else need this? Does JUnit or NUnit include this? Hey Ralf, >> I wonder, if and why the ASUnit UI is trying to call a http address? >> Working with ASUnit in the new FlashPlayer 8 throws a warning. Thanks for the post! You're definitely paranoid! ;-) Sorry about the warnings in the new player - this is the first we've heard of it. Just so you know - it doesn't check with every test. It checks only once when the AsUnit Ui panel is opened. I felt that the concerns (that I too would share) would probably be outweighed by the benefits of being notified directly when a new version is released. As you requested, I DEFINITELY wanted to make that check optional but it turned into a question of time and energy vs. community desires... Now that it's been brought up, the upcoming release is probably not going to have this feature because the rest of the functionality will be built in XUL - which has it's own facility for checking for updates. If you're especially interested in getting rid of the check, you can definitely grab the sources and compile the swf without that code. I believ= e you can simply do a search for "load" and comment the offending line. We are definitely not a marketing organization so we don't know anything specific about anyone using AsUnit, but thanks to that check, I can tell yo= u that there are about 300 to 400 unique users using AsUnit on a daily basis. I'm not sure if this is high or low, but it's definitely more encouraging than zero! An unrelated bit of data from sourceforge usage stats, we've had 4,479 downloads since our launch in May of 2004. Woohoo! (OK - I downloaded about 4,478 of those!) Thanks, Luke Bayes www.asunit.org <http://www.asunit.org> ------------------------------------------------------- From: Ralf Bokelberg Ok, i found it in the sources, which are available at asunit.org<http://asunit.org/> . It seems like ASUnit is calling home to check for a new version. Cheers, Ralf. |
