When possible, could you use different colors for the
brightness of stars, instead of using bigger and bigger
dots? 1 pixel and 2 pixel stars are fine on my low-res
screen, but the 4-pixel diameter stars block other
stars, and consume a large amount of space on the
screen. It would be better to have an option to make
the stars use different colors for different brightness
levels. Even if you only used grays, it still would be
a vast improvement.

Grayscale is a definite option being looked at as part of the
hires support updates. I'd expect this would work on 16
colour grayscale devices and up.
Colour would only be used for markers and objects with
defined colour attribute such as an enhanced star catalogue.
I don't think we would implement colour simply as a means of
distinguishing size.

Grayscale would be great. Would the stars then just be 1
pixel big? If not, could there possibly be an option to
make all stars be 1 pixel on my low res device?
(I'm now smiling and thinking of how nice this would be.
Can't wait!)

I suspect larger sizes for stars will be used on hires devices.
Between varying the pixel size and using colour we should be
able to produce far finer stepping from smallest to largest.
