Hi, Stendhal 0.96 is released, with a focus on improving the experience for players new to the game. We have examined and tweaked quests for new players, now hinting in the Travel log when a quest is not recommended for that player level. A protective wall around the starting city, Semos, helps direct players to quests within the city - and looks good. An interactive map using Google maps technology is accessible from within the client or http://stendhalgame.org/world/atlas.html?poi=npc, and the Beginners Guide http://stendhalgame.org/wiki/BeginnersGuide can now be launched from the help menu like the Manual and FAQ. Further client side improvements include better placement of tutorial messages, the option to hide heal and poison messages from the chat log. Hi, Marauroa 3.8.6 and Stendhal 0.93 are released. Marauroa 3.8.6 features performance optimisations for RPObject, by reducing the number of instantiations and creating internal maps and lists only on demand. More changes at http://arianne.sourceforge.net/engine/marauroa.html#changes Stendhal 0.93 features a new convenient behaviour for corpses with automatic raising of corpse windows and closure when empty. There are improvements to NPC understanding of compound words, a new type of source, for water, a new quest and some quest improvements. Stendhal 0.93 is also is an Easter release, players can try to find easter Bunny and the eggs he drops, or visit Semos which is decorated. Stendhal 0.92 is released, featuring an achievement system. Achievements mark milestones reached while playing the game. They track how rich and varied a character's life has been, and provide new goals for things to do. Achievements include completing quests, visiting places, looting items, killing creatures and producing items. A groups system is introduced, which facilitates small groups of players who embark on an adventure together. Features include shared access for looting corpses, chat channels, and a group GUI for management which also shows the health of group members. There's been refactoring of drawing methods for map layers, refactoring of quests and NPCs to make the code easier for new contributors and some new client features. Stendhal 0.87's client has been ported to swing, so that the floating game windows like bag and character panel are now off the main game screen. There's some minor changes in world too, like handling of /away using postman to store messages, and some new NPCs. NPCs who are 'attending' a player show an ear icon. Our website http://stendhalgame.org also got some attention, now you can read postman messages to and from your characters, and also see a summary of recent events in the game. Hi all, we have released Stendhal 0.86 and Marauroa 3.8.1. Stendhal 0.86 features a unique new quest, to complete the Wizards Circle in a magical tower. It builds on the magical damage types of fire, ice, dark and light, now introducing wizards who may one day teach spells. There's a lot of new sound and music in the world, including bells which ring regularly. There have also been many client improvements, including a settings panel with icon buttons and more help menus, circles instead of squares for visualising attack targets, and a karma scale for players. Hi all, this mail is to announce the release of Stendhal 0.84 and Marauroa 3.7, and also the upcoming Stendhal development meeting. Stendhal 0.84 features many new or improved quests, suitable for all levels. There are some new types of quest including killing many of one race of creature, and item collection quests where the request is randomised per player. Kill quests have been reworked to really check that creatures from a specific place were killed. The user interface has been improved to display animation for ranged attack using arrows or missiles. Also, status icons like being away and eating are displayed as part of the stats panel. There is a new release of Stendhal, version 0.83, and it is packed with changes. It features damage, resistance and susceptibility types for magical weapons, armor and creatures, according to the elements Fire, Ice, Dark and Light. Some creatures have an 'attack the weakest' strategy, changing their attack if a new, weaker enemy arrives. On the client side, mouse cursors are displaying different icons depending on what object is below: attack icons for creatures, look icons for NPCs, and so on. These actions can be performed with a single click or a double click depending on what clickmode is chosen by the player. The trading manager is tweeting new trades to http://twitter.com/stendhaltrade. Hi all, the Arianne team have released Stendhal 0.82! Stendhal 0.82 introduces an automatic raid system: Ados City now has a rat problem. Other features include a magical orb for teleporting players to a random (fun) destination, based on level and a new quest. Added to the client is the ability to set sound volumes, and single click walking. Hi, the Arianne team have released Stendhal 0.81 and Marauroa 3.4. Marauroa 3.4 adds support for the H2 serverless database system, as an alternative to MySQL. There are a number of other new features, relating to setting the max number of players, temporary bans and inactive accounts. Hi, Stendhal 0.80 and Marauroa 3.3 have been released! Stendhal 0.80 introduces a Trade Manager NPC to facilitate player-player trading, a list of items with their stats, images and prices for NPCs buying or selling items, new quests for Carmen, Jenny and Mrs. Yeti, a maze below Haizen's, and /ignore now working for public chat. This means that events sent from the server to the client can contain more complex data. Hi, Stendhal 0.78 and Marauroa 3.2 have been released. Come join Susi this year at the Semos Mine Town Revival Weeks - you can play tic tac toe, try a puzzle, play a treasure hunt game, hire a fun outfit and most importantly, make friends with Susi. In case you don't know the story, three years ago Susi was captured on her way back from the Semos Mine Town revival party. She was missing for two years and there was no party during that time - all of Ados searched for her. Last year, she was found aboard a pirate ship by players who had been defending Ados from a pirate attack. Mein_Dino, IschBing, Maja and Peka were heroes at that raid! This year there will be no fighting or danger, just lots of fun. Hi all, We are pleased to announce the release of Marauroa 3.0 and Stendhal 0.76. With Marauroa 3.0, the game engine now supports multithreading, and it is possible to run parallel transactions in different threads. JDBCDatabase has been split into several small *DAO (Data Access Object) classes. Low level database operations are now in the new package marauroa.server.db. These changes will require you to port any application using Marauroa, so for help on how to port your application see http://stendhal.game-host.org/wiki/index.php/Refactoring_Database_Access_in_Marauroa . Additionally, we have begun work on supporting other database systems beside MySQL. Stendhal 0.76 has been ported to use Marauroa 3.0. Also thanks to help from an OpenJDK developer, omair, the Stendhal client now works with OpenJDK! Stendhal 0.76 also features some new artwork; corpses, and the code has been refactored to allow specification of corpses per creature rather than per class, allowing much greater flexibility. The stendhal website is gaining new features all the time, our IRC logs can now be read from the website, and the links to freenode's webchat service found there. Admin have some very useful new features through the web interface, and it's also now possible to search information on NPCs (similarly to the feature for items and creatures.) Finally as a side note, we only restarted the server once during the 0.75 period and that was to install a little bug fix. So it seems certain that the memory hole which was found and fixed for the release of Stendhal 0.75 is the same one which was causing the server to run out of memory, it's great news that it is now fixed. There is another new release of Stendhal! Stendhal 0.73 is here, with lots of new updates. If you own a house you should definitely remember to login so you can see your name on the door, and get your check out the house chest! There is a new release of Stendhal! Pirates raided Ados from their ships which were anchored at the city. They attacked the town hall and castle but brave players defended the buildings and people. IschBing, Maja and Mein_Dino were particularly courageous. During the raid the pirates got stronger and stronger - not just smugglers and buccaneers but evil pirates and leaders too. The leader pirates seemed to hint of a captive girl on their ship. The players became worried, and wondered - is this the lost girl Susi? At one time the whole of Ados was looking for her. After they heard Susi shout for help they were sure she must be captive - but where? She said she could see water, so Peka and IschBing realised that the place to go was the pier. The other players followed. Once on the ships a wide search began for the lost girl. Mein_Dino found Susi first and the players led her back to Ados. She was reunited with her parents Mr and Mrs Ross. Susi had been captured on her way back from the Semos Mine Town revival party, two years ago. Last year there was no party as everyone was still so sad at Susi going missing. This year we celebrate the party again. Go to http://arianne.sourceforge.net to learn more about the new release. We are proud to announce the long awaited Stendhal 0.70, which has a reworked battle system. It needed no database reset to implement the new rules for damage. Have you played recently? For the rules of combat have changed, and to be ignorant of them is to be in mortal danger!! The Revised Battle Creed, applying to all beings, creature and human: * Experience level and attack skill both influence the fighter's ability to damage * Experience level and defense skill both influence the fighter's ability to defend * Even weak beings can harm the strongest being * Against fearsome creatures a heavy weapon is mightier than a knife or dagger * Be wary when patrolling in hostile areas. Enemies may appear at any moment ...for only human warriors: * A warrior shall not attack another human soul if he is much weaker than himself, except in defence * All shall know when they are safe from attack by any other warrior, by the green aura of protection * Those who kill another soul shall be branded with the red skull of death Be very aware, the principles of damage apply equally to creatures. You experienced warriors will notice much faster, harder battles than you are used to. Therefore, be cautious until you are again confident of your abilities, and then, go forth and fight!
