When a player dies, instead of moving to the afterlife right away, force the player to roam the area they died in for several minutes (5?). After that, a portal of light appears and the player is then placed in the afterlife. Maybe require they choose to walk through it, with the portal appearing every few minutes for 30 seconds, until they do. It would in effect be a access control portal requiring a HP of 0 to use, so other players could see it, but not use it.
While a ghost, the player will not be able to physically interact with their environment (aside from walking). They should also be limited to some range of their place of death (or perhaps their corpse, which could allow for some interesting side effects if someone where to come around and move it [draging them along with their corpse]). They should perhaps be able to talk publically with other players around.

Whenever I'm in a party and I die, I end up private messaging them to comment. It would be interesting if there was a certain period of time during which you are a talking corpse, and can watch the battle and chat for 30 secs or something before going to the afterlife. I don't think I'd go as far as the ghost thing. Unless ghosts can possess monsters. Then it would be awesome.
