When you login creatures can be attacking you (and in fact kill you) well before your client is showing the screen or allowing you to take potions.

I think that they should not 'see' you until the client is responding because although you can try to take care to logout somewhere 'safe' i.e. where no creatures may respawn, creatures can always be moved and also if your client crashes when you're surrounded then you're good as dead when you log back in.

Perhaps if it's too hard to determine if client is responsive yet, there could simply always be a grace period of N seconds when you login, during which time you are invisible to creatures?

i would say N seconds before spawning a player after login rather than invincible. It could be easilly abused.

There have been improvements in client startup time and a bug on the server which placed the player object in the world way too early (in the database accessing code) has been fixed.

I think the startup time is now short enough for this not being an issue anymore.

Please feel free to reopen if you disagree.
