It keeps telling me that it cannot find libgift.so.0, which I know quite well is in /usr/local/lib, which is in my path....is there somewhere specific that the rpm looks for packages?

Before trying to install, make sure you have typed the following in your terminal: export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=$PKG_CONFIG_PATH:/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig
also, it's recommended that you store this line in your .bash_profile, so this won't happen with other programs aswell.
