Hi Everyone!

I am Arink, doing working on Apertium on Mobile:Gsoc12

Recently I have finished my work according to timeline
[timeline]<http://www.arinkverma.in/2012/06/current-status-of-apertium-on-mobile.html#more>,
hence app is good for testing and review on device.

I have tested it on my samsung galaxy y but We should test it on as many
different as we can. The apk is upload on git. [

I would request all to please run on there device and report error on crash
happens.

Things to look for:

   1. *Cache feature:* This support is provided by Mikel's lttoolbox-java.
   so that subsequent translation from loaded package is faster.
   2. *SVN Installation*: User can install package directly from SVN, check
   if installation happens without any halt.
   3. *Widget support*: App provide atmost five mode specific shortcut on
   desktop, check if it is easy to use and work properly. Use widget setting
   and see if it works properly
   4. *Clipboard Manger*: This is tricky cus android API < 11 and API >= 11
   for clipboard is different but i tried to use both
   in conditional statement. Please try to use this feature from setting panel
   5. *Share intent:* see if share to other app is working fine.

work, it works pretty well. But, (there is always a but) there is one 
thing that annoys me, the text box where the text to translate should be 
pasted is already filled with a lot of text. A clean button might solve 
this.

Mitzuli is not a Play Store, ready to use product. It is a beta and you 
need to register as betatester to use it. They are two completely 
different things as far as I am concerned.

Hi Felipe,

I have had plans for a long time for a cleanup and fix these issues, but I
havent found the time :-(

However, the code is in SVN, so someone else could fix it.

Otherwise, could you nag me and come with a list of stuff that should be
fixed (and a wish list), then I'll try to find the time after Yeaster.

Hi Felipe,

Finally, I had some time to look at this.
Ive done come cleanup and changed so that the 'clear' button is visible and
so that the initial text to translate it taken from the clipboard (apart
from the first time)

Keep nagging me if there are other things you'd like to see!

Regarding the app, I gave it a trial run and while it seems quite 
functional, the color scheme should be changed to be more similar to 
Android's default interface.

I need your help to test Android Apertium app.

Few things have been added like App crash detection. Some device doesn't
have enough RAM to support cache feature for translation and hence get
crashed due to Low Memory. At the time of crash, App report it to app
preference and close itself gracefully. So in next run, advance feature
like cache can be switched off.

I have also done work on GUI to make it more useful and increase user
experience.

I put it on my phone, some comments:

1) when I remove the default text, then I get the cursor in the middle
of the box, would it be possible to put it at the top ? and maybe make
the box shrink ?

2) would it be possible to internationalise the interface ? e.g. when
the interface strings are more or less stabilised, could you put
a .mo/.po file somewhere for people to translate it ? 

3) Could the SVN list be cached and then rsynched (or something?) it
seems to take ages to download, even on my wifi.

4) When I try and download eu-es.jar the connection times out. Would it
be possible to offer an option to install from flash (e.g. I download
the .jar on my computer, copy it over and install it from there?)

It finally downloaded, and I installed it. When I clicked on "select"
from the interface nothing happened, so I went to "Manage", and clicked
on "Installed pairs" and clicked on it, and then it worked.

The translation took about 30 seconds for a small phrase like "Etxera
noa." and for "Bihar nire urtebetetzea izango da." (not sure of the
grammaticalness of the Basque) it took 37 seconds.

Is there any prospect for making this faster ?

The phone is a Samsung Galaxy GT-5570. I think that when it is released
it might be a good idea to have a table of how long people can expect to
wait for translations by phone/language pair.

know, no feature can be disabled from lttoolbox-java apart from caching...

Another important question: some days ago Jacob implemented delayed node
loading, and I introduced some small improvements in the caching mechanism.
This should considerably reduce memory usage (Jacob said around 70%). But,
if I'm not wrong, you haven't updated to the last version of lttoolbox-java
yet (your lttoolbox.jar<https://github.com/arinkverma/Apertiurm-Androind-app-devlopment/blob/master/ApertiumAndroid/libs/lttoolbox.jar>was
last modified 11 days ago, before we committed our changes), so your
app is not using these features. I think that this could have a
considerable impact in both stability and performance, so you should really
update the app so that people can test it properly. If I remember
correctly, I wrote you about this last week...

Yes. Although the files are located in SVN, this is not 'installing
from SVN' in the common understanding of the term, and I can see it
leading to frustrated misunderstanding between users and developers.

Yes.
Please update to the last version of Mikel's SVN branch right away so we
can see if it helps as I anticipate!
If it helps but not enough I can work more on memory trimming. As we have
discussed, random byte access to the .bin files could largely eliminate
loading time and make memory usage nearly 0.

Agree. Just write 'Install language packs'.
And, if you have a configuration file you can update remotely, then I
suggest you put the root URL  to SVN there instead of assuming its fixed
forever.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S  GT-I9000.

I downloaded the app and it opened right. Then I tried to "install
languages" but all that I got is a list of 6 language pairs and I can
do nothing with it. When I try to select them a pop up with the
following message arises:

the aplication Apertium (process process org.apertium.android) stopped
suddenly. Try again.

And that's it, I don't know if it is of any help, I hope so.

Just one comment, in the language pair list in Portuguese, the English
language name appears with the firs letter capitalised, and not the
rest of languages. In this case (Portuguese), it shouldn't be
capitalised.

Good work and hoping to have it on my phone soon!

I wrote the code that generates titles for language pairs, and I don't
understand why it's not working correctly in this case. In the general case
(when we have standard two letter codes), the name of the language is
generated as follows:

title = new Locale(code).getDisplayLanguage();

It seems that, at the same time,
Locale<http://developer.android.com/reference/java/util/Locale.html>uses
ICU in Android, so I guess that the problem is theirs... The only
thing we could do would be hardcoding the language name for that particular
case.

seems that your app goes crazy doing so. Language pairs installed before
the change keep their English name, while the ones downloaded after it use
the Portuguese name. So the app says that I have two language pairs
installed, "basco -> espanhol" and "Basque -> English", and it considers
that "basco" and "Basque" are different languages...

Huh, I hadn't tried doing that myself, but I had my phone in Japanese
and switched it back to English, and can confirm it behaves just like
Mikel said above. The language pairs I had installed before I switched
locales still show their names in Japanese, and the pair I installed
after switching back to English shows in English. One question I am
curious about is, how common is this use case (switching locales on
the phone)? I imagine it would be more common among those on this list
than the general population, however.

Arink, I'm assuming you're caching the localized language names when
installing the language pairs?

I'll try to find time to try the new APK today.

I can't say I do it every day, but it isn't that unusual either. Our

Thanks for setting previous version and feedback. I am pushed new version
with following improvement
1. Apertium Android has given entirely new fresh and elegant look. The
color scheme is similar to that of www.apertium.org
2. App is now using permanent SVN i.e

3. The porject is made more readable and structure

Some notes:

When I open the applications and have nothing installed, I am able to
click the → arrow and it says "There is no mode from <to> to <from>".

I love how clicking <from> or <to> goes straight into the download list,
but then when I click a pair, nothing happens, I have to long-click, is
there a reason for that?

After selecting a pair to install, should the heading really say
"Modes"? How about "Translation directions" or something a bit less
apertium-jargony?

"Unziping files" should probably be spelled "Unzipping files".

When I switch the 'from' language, 'to' is set to <to> and clicking →
gives "There is no mode from null to katalansk"; perhaps it should
switch to the last used mode with that from-language (or at least the
first available mode with that from-language).

On clicking 'Translate', the "waiting" box says "Translator", it should
probably say "Translating".

When I select all text in the input box, both the text and the
background is black …

Perhaps it should be possible to select and copy the output text too
(though I see now it's possible using the Clipboard Push feature).

longpress was to avoid downloading if item is pressed by mistake while
scrolling list. But It is killing user experience so longpress has been
converted to normal press.

Arink, Apertiumers,

we are developing a sking for the Apertium on Android code on svn for
one of our clients: the UPV. They already offer an Apertium-based
translation portal (http://politraductor.upv.es/) and they wanted a
mobile version such as the one offered by Softcatalà
(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.softcatala.traductor)
but we convinced them to use Arink's version. They are happy to
contribute the skin, with the same license of the source code.

We've got two questions: where do you want us to release the code?
(trunk, a particular branch...)

Arink, right now support mail is pointint to you mail, as this is just
a skin, should we keep it or do you prefer not to receive it and
redirect it to, for example, this list?

And another question out of this: do you have plans to upload the
current app to Google Play?
