I actually got the apcupsd to start successfully after running make-hiddev, but putting back my DEVICE statement in my conf file. However, I rebooted the server to test the startup script and now its erroring again with the same "apcupsd FATAL ERROR in linux-usb.c at line 678 Cannot open UPS device:" error. I made no changes since it was up and running and the reboot. Any ideas? Try commenting out the DEVICE statement in your /etc/apcupsd/apcupsd.conf If you still get the same error: cd <apcupsd-source>/examples become root ./make-hiddev try again. If it fails at that point, you most likely have a kernel with no HID USB support.
