Thank you for explanation. And there is no cable I can make or buy that output with a serial interface?

That way I can use a serial to Ethernet device server and obtain the UPS information on a computer located in another building.

that's for certain Smart-UPS models with RJ-50 which do carry RS-232 bus in that connector

Hi,

what serial adapter? This device does not use any kind of the old-style serial (RS-232 or 485) bus, but USB (Universal Serial Bus), or voltage signalling (you don't want that). Throw it away and connect the UPS directly to some USB port, the first table here shows correct pinout: https://pinoutguide.com/UPS/apc_usb_cable_pinout.shtml

You should than have usb in the config file of apcupsd, I believe.

Yes i have tried , but I think my serial to usb adapter could be a problem. I need to investigate this more. 

But I was just wondering if it would be possible and if you can have DATA on windows, it would indeed also work on Linux.

Hi Pieter,

I have a Back-UPS CS-350 but it is monitored through the Windows implementation of apcupsd.
It's using the standard 10-pin-RJ to USB cable that came with the UPS.

I can't think of any reason that it wouldn't work on Linux if a package is available.
Have you tried it?
