Hi Xavier,

   The reason it kind-of-works is because the Protection Center 500
is a UPS that follows the "Human Interface Device (HID)" spec.  APC
also makes UPSes that follow that spec, too.  That UPS spec is something
that Microsoft included in Windows for simple signalling which is why
a lot of UPS makers support it, you can just plug one of their devices
into a Windows box and it will work for simple signalling.
