If I go to APC's website and click on the Home and Office Desktop what I get is a bunch of BackUPS UPSes. These are USB UPSes with simple signalling - and the larger ones have been brushed up a bit with the addition of a big LCD display on the front of them that displays the line voltage. What apcupsd gets from them is barely more than what Microsoft Windows UPS support gets from them - Battery-charge/runtime remaining, and on/off battery. I don't know if PowerChute Personal Edition will give you any more real data off a BackUPS, it didn't in the past, though. Going to Best Buy and Frys most of the APC UPses sold that are aimed at the consumer are BackUPS. The Microlink/Smartlink issue is really an issue with people wanting to power data centers and servers, and a few power users who want more info from their UPS than "oh gee, power is out, I guess it's time to shut down, now" And, really, seriously, anyone building a datacenter is going to be using the larger APC UPSes - the 2000, 3000VA units and above - and they are going to have the money to spring for the $60 AP9620 card. (yes I realize they may not like doing this but they have the money, no question about it) And anyway they should be running the SNMP card. The small businesses/power users who buy a brand new SmartUPS 1500 are the ones who complain the most about this and I can understand that - they get a brand new SMT1500 UPS for $500 and that's big money to them - heck you could buy a whole computer for that!! Then they find out they have to spend another $60 to get any decent variables out of their new UPS - no wonder they are pissed - they figure that for that kind of money they should get smartlink - what they don't realize is that $500 for a UPS is nothing to a company like APC and $60 is less than nothing...
