Thanks. That would however mean fiddling with the boot code in the initrd image. I'd like to try and avoid that. Mistakes can easily render the system unbootable. I think that the next-best thing is to move the creation of the /fastboot file down to just before the read-only remount of the root file system, so that the probability of an unclean shutdown after the creation of /fastboot (which was quite small already) is vastly reduced.
