The rpm.rte is the base package to support RPM packages on AIX. Thus without it you would not have the command rpm ;-) Since the toolbox packages are pretty out of date - IBM paids probably more for lawyers then for supporting the toolbox I suggest to get the the latest packages from Michael Perzl. - http://www.perzl.org/aix/ He provides also the spec files and the documentation regarding the build environment. hth Hajo From: Yun BJ Zhang [mailto:zha...@cn...] Sent: Monday, January 05, 2009 10:12 AM To: aix...@li... Hi Reza, i understand fully your problem but i think we have a simple solution for it. The point is simply that you just DO NOT build the packages. The packages are build by an external provider. You supply the spec files and maybe also give support for creating a build system for AIX GNU packages. This way - You are out of legal issues. - The build environment is open source. People needing GNU packages for AIX can download it from the build server or - mirror the build environment and create their own packages. - The build environment could be used to build packages for AIX 4.3/5/1 as well ( If hardware is available ) - Money spend on layers could be used more efficently by IBM For this reason i have a machine ( p510 2cpu / 16GB ) running mpars for AIX 5.3 and 6.1 accessible over the internet. In case i have enough money i would not mind to get a power6 p520 . Maybe other would also give access to dedictaed machines all over the world. cheers Hajo who dreams to be able to use an build environment like the opensuse build service. |

I think you'll find that most of the stuff in the Toolbox is painfully out of date. The reason is that here at IBM, internally there are very tedious processes we have to follow before our lawyers approve the update of a package. This holds even to update foo-0.1 to foo-0.2. The resources and turnaround time it takes to keep this up for every package is the reason the Toolbox has become stagnant. If you need mutt anytime soon, your best option is to use our RPM spec file: <ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/SPECS/mutt-1.4.2.1-1.spec> With little modification you can use it to build your own mutt-1.5.18 package. -- Reza Arbab ar...@au... |

Hi, I opened a ticket http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2143015&group_id=128955&atid=712808 in the sourceforge issue traccker. In short (details see ticket): the rpm command on AIX 6.1 creates an unwanted directory for each package installed with the --prefix rpm switch. This seems to be a bug special to the outdated rpm version used in AIX. I can provide a simple test rpm with spec files to reproduce the problem. Any comments? I am sorry, my previous answer was incomplete. Ordinarily, pre 3.0 zip and pre 6.0 unzip supports files < 2GB only. Large file support is patched into zip and unzip with recent Linux distros, effectively inreasing available file size to 4GB. Zip 3.0 and unzip 6.0 supports zip64, providing compression and uncompression of files > 4GB. At present, zip 3.0 is released while unzip 6.0 still is in beta (beta 4). I've tried zip 3.0, unzip 2.52 with Fedora9 patches and unzip 6.0d on a Power5+ system running AIX 5.3. Everything works just fine. So, if you need to run unzip on files > 2GB, you either need to patch unzip 2.52 to provide large file support or to compile unzip 6.0d. I downloaded the Fedora9 unzip source RPM, unpacked and applied the patches to the plain source before compiling on AIX. --joern On Fri, 17 Oct 2008, Jørn Amundsen wrote: > Large file support (> 2GB) is provided with zip 3.0 released 7 July > 2008. We just upgraded the sudo RPM on our AIX systems to the latest one available (sudo-1.6.9p15-2noldap). One thing we noticed is that the AUTHSTATE environment variable is passed through to the command environment ONLY when sudo prompts you for your password, as seen here: /home/richb> env | grep AUTH AUTHSTATE=LDAP /home/richb> sudo env | grep AUTH Password: AUTHSTATE=LDAP /home/richb> sudo env | grep AUTH /home/richb> sudo -k /home/richb> sudo env | grep AUTH Password: AUTHSTATE=LDAP /home/richb> sudo env | grep AUTH /home/richb> sudo grep AUTH /etc/sudoers Defaults env_delete=AUTHSTATE What is really interesting is that we have always had an env_delete=AUTHSTATE line in our sudoers file (since we DO NOT want AUTHSTATE passed through) but unfortunately it seems to be ignored in this version. I know that this version of sudo has the env_reset setting enabled by default so we really shouldn't need the env_delete=AUTHSTATE statement any more. I have tried the above scenario without the env_delete=AUTHSTATE in /etc/sudoers but the behavior is the same as above (i.e. any time sudo prompts for your password the AUTHSTATE environment variable appears in the command environment being executed by sudo). So this seems like a bug to me and I wanted to see if it could be fixed or if someone could suggest a workaround. Thanks in advance, Rich |

Thank you for the clarification, Reza! I actually got rid of it by using the force switch. Thanks for the reference. Your reference reminds me I ordered a hard copy of this book months ago, still waiting. :-) Notice maximum rpm also points ut epoch isn't a good thing, and should be avoided if possible. Epoch:2 is present in Fedora8 and 9, and could be where you got it. I suspect the 1.2.32 package you are installing has an unspecified epoch number, and thus RPM interprets its version to be a lesser value. <http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm-snapshot/s1-rpm-depend-manual-dependencies.html#S4-RPM-DEPEND-VERSION-EPOCH> The "Epoch: 2" line in the spec file was introduced in our first libpng-1.2.8 release, and almost certainly came from whichever Linux distribution's package we based ours on. It's unfortunate, but there's no way to remove the epoch now. Doing so is essentially a step backwards in version. So, you can either force install your 1.2.32 package, or first rebuild it to also have an epoch number of 2. -- Reza Arbab ar...@au... |

The libpng rpm's are ugly at the best. The %files section of the spec file reads: %files ... /usr/lib/ /usr/bin/ %files devel ... /usr/include/ So, the rpm attempts to take control over the bos.rte /usr/lib, /usr/bin and /usr/include directories. (!) Fortunately, it attempts an rm on the plain directory path if removing or updating the rpm, and does not appear to remove any contents: [snip from rpm -vv -Uhv] ... D: file: /usr/include action: remove cannot remove /usr/include - directory not empty ... D: file: /usr/lib action: remove cannot remove /usr/lib - directory not empty D: file: /usr/bin/libpng12-config action: remove D: file: /usr/bin/libpng-config action: remove D: file: /usr/bin action: remove cannot remove /usr/bin - directory not empty Furthermore, when trying to update the beast, /usr/bin/rpm figures out the release 1.2.8 > 1.2.32 and bails out on update: ... D: installing binary packages package libpng-1.2.8-6 (which is newer than libpng-1.2.32-1) is already installed package libpng-devel-1.2.8-6 (which is newer than libpng-devel-1.2.32-1) is already installed This applies to rpm-3.0.5-43 as well as rpm-3.0.5-44. --joern |

Hi Bill, On 13 Sep 2008, 09:30AM CDT, Bill Pringlemeir <spa...@sy...> wrote: > Is it possible to update make to 3.81? I know it seems strange, but even updating make-3.80 to make-3.81 is slowed down by very rigorous process we are forced to go through internally here. We're looking at updating a lot of the dev tools (autoconf, automake, m4, etc.) at once, but until that happens I'm afaid using your own homegrown package is the only way to go. -- Reza Arbab ar...@au... |

Is it possible to update make to 3.81? I can make the RPM myself, but some clients would prefer to get the packages from aixtoolbox sight directly. The 3.80 version has many bugs with auto-depends and order-only prerequisites along with some other problems. Thanks for the consideration, Bill Pringlemeir. |

Hi Bobby, On 27 Aug 2008, 04:22PM CDT, "Gunn, Bobby" <bob...@em...> wrote: > exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program sudo because of the following > errors: > > 0509-150 Dependent module /usr/lib/libldap.a(libldap.so.2) > could not be loaded. The problem is that sudo should be finding /opt/freeware/lib/libldap.a before /usr/lib/libldap.a. It was due to an incorrect libpath in the sudo program. However, we fixed this in sudo-1.6.9p15-2: <ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/sudo/sudo-1.6.9p15-2.aix5.2.ppc.rpm> -- Reza Arbab ar...@au... |
