The CVS maintainers have announced a security problem in current levels of CVS. A new update has been released. See the cvs home page for more information at http://www.cvshome.org. The patch for the security problem has been added to the AIX Toolbox image, which is at version 1.11.5, with revision #5. That is, the version is now 1.11.5-5. It includes the earlier security patches, so although the Toolbox does not have the latest version, all known security patches are present. The updated image is available at: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/cvs/cvs-1.11.5-5.aix5.1.ppc.rpm |

The reference in the README deals with the very earliest images in the Toolbox, just the first few months it existed; the older version of libtool (and thus the very earliest Toolbox images) produced some shared objects with the .a suffix. But that was a bad idea, because a .a file is supposed to be an archive library, not an actual single shared object file. And it couldn't be versioned; you couldn't add new members because it wasn't an archive. So now, the shared object is created with the ".so.X" extension and archived into a real archive. So, for example, you would have libfoo.a(libfoo.so.0). That works out fine, though now you face an issue when a new version is necessary. Hopefully most libraries maintain compatibility whenever possible, such that an update doesn't require a new shared object version; but sometimes that does happen. Look at the libpng package for example. It contains both "libpng.so.2" and "libpng.so.3" members. But what are the consequences of this? When libpng.so.3 became the new revision, we kept the older "libpng.so.2" so that it would still be available to any executable which tries to load libpng.a(libpng.so.2). That would be the case for any executable that was linked to libpng back when .so.2 was the only version. But now, with a newer version, we want the old executables to keep working with the old version, and newer executables to link with the newer .so.3 version. To do this, the updated libpng.a was created by archiving the old and new shared objects, but first the LOADONLY mode bit was set on the .so.2 image. This means that the symbols are available for loading when referenced by a running executable, but they are ignored by the linker. So at link time, the symbols from libpng.so.3 are the ones that the linker uses on new links. Check it with "dump -ov /opt/freeware/lib/libpng.a" and notice the flags: $ dump -ov /opt/freeware/lib/libpng.a libpng.a[libpng.so.2]: ***Object Module Header*** # Sections Symbol Ptr # Symbols Opt Hdr Len Flags 5 0x00033668 4187 72 0x7002 Flags=( EXEC DYNLOAD SHROBJ LOADONLY ) Timestamp = "May 17 16:12:33 2004" Magic = 0x1df (32-bit XCOFF) ........(and....).... libpng.a[libpng.so.3]: ***Object Module Header*** # Sections Symbol Ptr # Symbols Opt Hdr Len Flags 5 0x00036bd2 4461 72 0x3002 Flags=( EXEC DYNLOAD SHROBJ ) Timestamp = "May 19 18:09:23 2004" Magic = 0x1df (32-bit XCOFF) ....... To set the LOADONLY flag on a shared object, just run: /usr/bin/strip -e libfoo.so.0 If you want to turn that flag back off, just change the -e to -E. Beyond that, there are occasionally packages that do their own thing by renaming themselves and becoming a unique package of their own. One example would be "libxml" and "libxml2", both separate packages that can coexist and install their own separately named libraries. In a case like that, they rename the library such that you have to select "-lxml" or "-lxml2" because they respectively contain their own separate libraries, libxml.a and libxml2.a. I think you are asking more about the libpng sort of case above, but I thought it worth mentioning this other case as well. Hello, The AIXTools README mentions a new approach to shared object versioning, but does not give much details. Shared libraries such as openssl or expat are in archives, e.g. /opt/freeware/lib/libexpat.a contains libexpat.so.0 (actually 2 libexpat.so.0, one 32 bit and one 64 bit, as show by ar -t -X 32_64) On Linux, the standard versioning approach is to use different shared library names for incompatible versions (e.g. libexpat.so.0 and libexpat.so.1); and when you link a program, you select a specific version by using a symbolic link that points to desired version. How does this work on AIX? If I have libexpat.so.0 and libexpat.so.1 in the same /opt/freeware/lib/libexpat.a, how can I tell the linker to pick a specific version? Is there any example? Thanks, Bernard |

You found the right place. Since the Toolbox is unsupported, there is not a "formal" channel for support or requests; sending mail to this list is the best place to ask. As for samba, other requests for an update have been made, and release of a newer version has been pending for a long time. I can confirm that samba version 3.* builds pretty cleanly on AIX, if you'd like to try it. The slow pace of updates (which applies to everything in the Toolbox), is not because of compatibility problems with building these things on AIX -- the delay is because extensive legal scrutiny is required of all open source package updates that we distribute; great care must be taken because this is code that we did not write and do not own copyrights for. (Unfortunately I can't comment on any specifics of the legal review process, but I promise that the lawyers are busy.) I wish we could update more packages more frequently, but the rules are strict. At any rate, I don't have a guess on an update projection. So... what options exist? If currency of the version is not of foremost importance, then the AIX Toolbox images may still meet your needs. You can update on occassion, when the Toolbox eventually does, though the time between updates is large and unpredictable. If you need version updates more frequently than the Toolbox is capable of providing, you may want to consider other sites which can do package updates more frequently. Some overlap with Toolbox packages, while others are uniquely available at the respective sites. The two well known sites are: UCLA site -- they have samba 3.0.2a: http://aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu/packages/samba.html Bull freeware site -- They have samba too (at last check), but I cannot confirm a version as I write this because their site says it is to temporarily unavailable. There are also fee-based groups out there that will provide built packages for you; one example that I am aware of is www.thewrittenword.com. Though not free, it may be worth considering if the need is strong. Finally, the most flexible approach (though with more work involved), is to build the code locally. Depending on your background, you might find that this is not so difficult; you needn't have any special familiarity with the code in order to build it. In most cases, it is just a matter of downloading the source tarball and following the instructions provided. If you know a little about rpm and spec files, you could go a little further and build an rpm image by copying the last available spec file from the Toolbox FTP site, updating the revision number, and running "rpm -ba" on the spec file. Well, there's a little more to it; you'd need to have most of the basic GNU development util rpms installed such as 'make' and 'install', either the VAC or gcc compiler, etc. In fact, if you are trying to build your own copy of a Toolbox package, this mailing list would be a good place to ask questions of or share experiences with other users who build and/or run Toolbox open source packages on AIX. Hello, Unfortunately, my question is not how to handle diskette under AIX (following commands are perfect). My question is really related to Linux and AIX. I try to explain better. With Linux affinity, is there a way to mount image file coming from Linux under AIX ? I took as example bootdisk.img but in fact all ramdisk disks created under Linux. I mean how to use "losetup" command and "mount -o loop" under AIX. [AIX mount command doesn't support following types of filesystem : dos and ext3. So I don't know how to add this] Have you already re-compiled "mount " in order to be able to use mount in loopback under AIX ? Some recent security patches have been added to a few AIX Toolbox packages. To address these items, the patches have been applied to the current Toolbox levels of each package. We hope to update to the latest versions sometime in the future, but these fixed packages will address the security items in the meantime. CVS 1.11.5: A few patches have been made here, including the most recent (and most important) security fix. You can find info on this from the CVS home page at http://www.cvshome.org. The latest version offered from the cvs home site is 1.11.16; in the Toolbox, the security patches have been added as patches to the Toolbox version, 1.11.5. RSYNC 2.5.4: A patch has been made to the Toolbox rsync (2.5.4), backported from the most recent rsync-2.6.1, to address their recent security advisory -- see the rsync home page at http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync. (Just for good measure, we've also included the prior security patch from Dec 2003 although that vulnerability was not an issue on AIX). Hi, I was hoping somebody could solve this for me: When installing "samba-client-2.2.7-4.aix4.3.ppc.rpm" I get : rpm -v -i samba-client-2.2.7-4.aix4.3.ppc.rpm error: failed dependencies: libreadline.a(libreadline.so.4) is needed by samba-client-2.2.7-4..... I don't see a package on the "toolbox" list where this would be available...thanks very much ******************************* This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and may be privileged and are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Hi Joseph, It's been a while since I have seen this problem. I think the easiest solution is to install (from AIX media) X11.fnt.ucs.ttf. Then run /opt/freeware/bin/fc-cache . This will let FontConfig know the new fonts are there. I think that will do it. Let me know if it doesn't and I'll see if I can remember more. I just installed AIX toolbox for Linux ( building it from the FTP via the wget command ) On a AIX 5.2L RS/6000 I installed: Base Desktop Base GNOME Base GNOME Apps I then use "exec /usr/bin/gnome-session" to start the desktop. The desktop comes up fine and all the menus and apps work fine. But Gnome Terminal appears to have no fonts or is not able to display the fonts correctly. xterm and aixterm ( although for some reason uses really large font size ) works Why is only Gnome Terminal effected? How do I correct? I've tried all the fonts listed in Gnome Terminal setup, was there a RPM or LPP that maybe not installed? Since this box was installed as a server, maybe a X11 LPP was left out by mistake? Thank you for the help in advance. Joseph T. Apuzzo SP Software, Level II / III Support |

Thanks for the analysis. I do hope to get rsync updated in the near future; it should happen sometime later this year. This is only for AIX 5 (version 5.*) however, which already works with large files. You are correct that our rsync build enabled large file support (via CFLAGS=-D_LARGE_FILES). No further rpm images are being built for 4.3.3, as that level of AIX is no longer officially in service. The environment: sshd on aix 5.2 using current IBM package ssh on aix 4.3.3 using current IBM package rysnc on aix 5.2 and 4.3.3 using current IBM package (See reference [1] for the location of the packages I used) The problem: aix433$ rsync -av --rsh=ssh greater_than_2gb_file user@aix52:/some/where fails. Other info: aix52$ rsync -av --rsh=ssh greater_than_2gb_file user@solaris_9:/some/where works. This means rsync itself is indeed large file enabled. The clue: Internet search (Ref [2]) indicates that rsync uses mkstemp() call. aix433 does not have the 64bit mkstemp() function, therefore it fails. The same post indicates not to use mkstemp(), and mentioned "Poor AIX users/programmers" in a public forum. I would suggest making a new package using the updated version of rsync. The updated version of rsync may already uses the workaround of not using mkstemp(). A better solution would be supply the 64bit mkstemp() in libc as an AIX 4.3.3 patch. My maintenance level for aix 4.3.3 is 11 (the latest). This clue is for reference only. I am not positive it is correct. Hi there, I'm using the IBM-provided version of OpenSSH on AIX 5.2. I've found that /etc/security/lastlog isn't updated when key authentication is used. When using SSH password-based authentication, the file *is* updated, and even displays "ssh" in the tty_last_login attribute. I'm interested in the time_last_login attribute. Am I missing something here? I'd like /etc/security/lastlog to be updated, even when key-based authentication is used. Thanks, -- Jurjen Oskam "Avoid putting a paging file on a fault-tolerant drive, such as a mirrored volume or a RAID-5 volume. Paging files do not need fault-tolerance." - 308417 |

Leigh -- Thanks for the information. This has been corrected and the updated image has been uploaded to the FTP site. You can get the new image here: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/sudo/sudo-1.6.7p5-2.aix5.1.ppc.rpm Anyone using sudo should either update to that image, or (as you note) they can manually correct this by doing a "chmod 440 /etc/sudoers" and get the same result.
