UTF-32 and UCS-4 are pretty much the same thing. AIX calls the encoding UTF-32. hi .. I need small help .... I am using iconv function to convert GB2312 to UCS-4. When we tried to execute iconv function on our AIX 5.2 systems,we got the below error $ iconv -f UCS-4 -t GB2312.1980-0-GR cannot open converter .. Suspecting if an appropriate converter is present,we looked into the /usr/lib/nls/loc/iconv directory but failed to see any converter to convert from/to UCS-4. So Could you please tell me how can I solve this problem. Thanks, Ashok Kessetti. Yahoo! India Matrimony: Find your life partneronline. |

Yesterday I was asked to intall vnc on a few servers. After reading you doc/readme etc I proceeded to do the install and then let the user know to give it a try. He called back saying he was having a problem where it could not find a font which I believe he said was called "fixed". Is there something else that needs to also be loaded ?? Kind of eerie when you run that rpm command and get nothing back but the command prompt. My telephone number below is not correct for now - - it is 480-441-2887. All the old images are on the ftp site: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/INSTALLP/ppc/ I pretty sure some of these are for AIX 4.3.3, I just don't remember when we cut over to AIX 5.1. I've just rebuilt db-3.3.11-4 and gdbm-1.8.3-2, each including their 64-bit versions. You will be able to see them on the FTP site within an hour or two. Hopefully they will allow you to make further progress with your Python build. That changelog entry you saw reflects a change that never really got published; that was a remnant of the building of Toolbox packages for AIX on ia64, which was to have included 64-bit images back at the time. Meanwhile, the Toolbox packages remain almost entirely 32-bit, but with a few libraries built with 64-bit members built beginning earlier this year ... mainly for developers who are trying to link with 64-bit versions of libraries when doing things just like what you are doing. I don't want to start any flame wars! I've been told that the company has standardized on ClearCase and I can no longer use CVS. Does anyone have opinions about cvs vs. clearcase? I want to stay with cvs. Mike |

Ralf, I think you are on the right track on your build. The 64-bit build isn't finding the readline symbols because the readline library only contains 32-bit members. You can see this by comparing /usr/bin/ar -X32 -tv /usr/lib/libreadline.a with /usr/bin/ar -X64 -tv /usr/lib/libreadline.a #nothing there If you build a 64-bit readline and archive it into the libreadline.a library, that should get you past this error.... but I'm attempting right now to do that in the hopes of being able to upload it shortly. I think I've almost got it. Hi, has anybody already tried to compile Python2.4 on AIX? In the end what I would need is a 64-bit version, but I start with the standard 32bit one ;-) 1. It wants the native AIX perl, which is on the AIX install media in installp format in the "perl.rte" fileset. (The only reason there is a perl in the Toolbox is so you can use a newer version than what came with the system, if desired). After you install perl.rte, you will need to run /usr/sbin/updtvpkg so that the presence of /usr/bin/perl gets recorded in the RPM database. The perl RPM image doesn't put perl at /usr/bin/perl because it would conflict with the native installp version, if present. But if you don't have your AIX media, you could create a symlink: # ln -s /opt/freeware/bin/perl /usr/bin/perl But, the RPM database won't know about it. You could then do your rpm install adding the --nodeps option so that it doesn't look up the dependency in the database and installs anyway (only recommended if you know the dependency really is met in spite of it not being recorded in the database). Assuming you downloaded Mozilla from the IBM site, you can find links to all of their prerequisite packages, including xft and xrender. You should have gotten there from the Mozilla page at: http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/aix/browsers/ And to get the image you would have followed a couple links to get here: https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/preLogin.do?source=mozilla&S_PKG=dl_17_ww&S_TACT=104CBW71 (at which point you need to do a free register/signin). When you then get to the download page -- the same page where you downloaded Mozilla itself -- you will see a list of "Required RPMs" down the page in the "Install Instructions" section. Within this list are links to both of the images that you mention, which take you directly to their ftp download locations. But I'm just including that information for anyone else reading this who may be looking to download the newest Mozilla package. To save you time, I'll just list the locations that you need here: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/xft/xft-0.0-0.aix5.1.ppc.rpm ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/xrender/xrender-0.0-0.aix5.1.ppc.rpm (These are living in the 'Toolbox' FTP space, but you don't see them on the Toolbox download page because they are actually just empty placeholder packages, put in place only for the Mozilla requisite. Although Mozilla wants them, they are of no use or interest to anyone else at this time.) The zlib 1.2.1 and libxml2 2.6.8 images have both had patches added for security bugs. (zlib's is taken from 1.2.2, and libxml2 from 2.6.15). If you use either of these packages, you should consider updating to these newer images: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/zlib/zlib-1.2.1-2.aix5.1.ppc.rpm ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/libxml2/libxml2-2.6.8-2.aix5.1.ppc.rpm The respective "devel" packages (optional): ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/zlib/zlib-devel-1.2.1-2.aix5.1.ppc.rpm ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/libxml2/libxml2-devel-2.6.8-2.aix5.1.ppc.rpm -- David Clissold cl...@au... |

The libtiff security patches were indeed included in the 3.6.1 Toolbox image, so that one is fine. It looks like there are a couple of small changes for libxml2 for security purposes in 2.6.15, and the fixes are not there in 2.6.8, so that needs to be integrated into our copy.... stay tuned on that.
