Sigh!! Kept forgetting to reply to the mailing list instead of someone's email. Sorry about that... -----Original Message----- From: Scott Fletcher=20 Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 10:37 AM To: 'Gerhard Gonter' Subject: RE: FW: [tbox-l] Request: PHP > 4.0.6, Apache2, teTeX 3 Yea, I know.. =20 I haven't tried the AIX toolbox since I am better off with compiling the codes from the sources instead of some bffs and rpms. It just work better that way. I was only giving a thought here. I have found AIX O/S bug with the AIX's libc deficiency when compiling OpenSSL but that problem is overcome by upgrading the maintenance level to the latest version. I also found a bug in the AIX's native make utility when compiling PHP. And so on... This is for AIX 5.2. We all know that AIX O/S will become a better product when people file an AIX bug and let the IBM folks fix the bug via maintenance releases or newer O/S version. Sometime a workaround is specified in the bug report before the fix is made. Nobody want to pay $400 or $500 per hour on tech support with IBM. That would make a big difference here, you know... It's just a thought here. Otherwise I would have to spend some time trying to hack the GNU source code to make a workaround around the AIX's bug. A friend here did the research and found that most businesses use .NET and JAVA instead of PHP which is considered surprising. I like PHP and hope to continue to stick with it for a while longer. For open source packages for multiple platforms take a look at The Written = Word. They provide packages for AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, RHEL. It does cost m= oney, but I'd rather pay someone else that deals with packaging to do this = than have to do it myself. http://www.thewrittenword.com Not associated with them other than a very satisfied customer. I have three requests for applications to add to the toolbox. -Many web applications like SPIP or phpMyAdmin require more advanced=20 version of PHP than the 4.0.6 that is available now on the AIX toolbox. Not even counting PHP5, which is already mature language, PHP4 is now at level 4.4.1. On exposed web applicationsn it would be nice to have up to date applications to avoid security holes. -Apache 2 now exist for quite a while and Apache 1.3 is hardly=20 maintained, which also could pose security risks ( last security fix=20 release is 1.3.34 while IBM's is 1.3.31) -Other scientific applications like teTeX 3would be worthwhile to have. I have found sometimes those application on other repository like=20 AIXPdlib, (not in RPM format) or Bull (in RPM format) but they sit in=20 /usr/local in place of /opt/freeware. I am not that familiar with RPM=20 but I would think that it makes them not compatible with the IBM linux=20 toolbox. I tried to rebuild php-4.0.6 on my own to learn how it works and see if=20 I can make my own 4.4.1 RPM, but the php-4.0.6-5.spec I found on the IBM site (ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/SPECS)=20 calls for 3 patch files (php-4.0.6-alloca.patch, php-4.0.6-conf.patch,=20 php-4.0.6-rfc1867.patch), which are nowhere to be found on=20 ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/PATCHES. What=20 does that mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated... ------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? Paul, While your at it can I get an updated version of the gd library? I am trying to get several things up and running on our AIX environment (Bugzilla, a Perl graphing script, etc.) that depend on an updated gd library. =20 The version in the toolbox is GD version is 1.8.4, while the current version is at 2.033. The problems stem from the fact that the older version has a different API and all the newer programs crash and burn when trying to use it. I tried to compile it myself but was getting really weird errors from the Font subsystem (I think). I'm not an AIX guru, just a Linux geek trying to get AIX to work with me. :) Thanx! When I tried to build the PHP source code, I ran into make error. After some debugging I found that the pound is not being escaped as it should have. Here's a simplified testcase. =20 --snip- BUILD_CLI =3D echo '\#! .' --snip- =20 The error being displayed after typing the "make" command is this... =20 --snip- echo '\ /usr/local/bin/bash: -c: line 0: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `'' make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 2. --snip- =20 The script is trying to output the "#! .", just something like "#!/usr/local/bin/bash" for example. =20 =20 So, why doesn't it work with the GNU make utility. What's the possible workaround to it. Once I have a working example then I can file a php bug to provide a workaround to the problem for AIX. =20 Thanks... |

I ran this by our internationalization team, and got this reply: If you're interested in transliteration, then ICU is certainly something you want to consider. ICU has a very robust set of transliteration APIs, and is probably your best bet for this type of functionality. iconv() is really for character conversion, not transliteration. You can checkout http://www.ibm.com/software/globalization/icu and click the downloads link, or checkout the docs at http://icu.sourceforge.net. We are also currently shipping ICU version 2.8 ( 64-bit libraries only ) with the operating system, under fileset ICU4C.rte. It is kind of an old version at this point, so you may want to download the latest from the ICU website... See http://icu.sourceforge.net/userguide/Transform.html for a good discussion of the types of transliterators available in ICU and how to use them....... Hopefully this will be of some help. I am looking to obtain the 32-bit libiconv libraries for AIX 5.2 from IBM. We use the iconv call to do take care of some non-standard characters which often get posted to a web form from Word documents, and this works great on Linux. The built-in AIX iconv didn't like the "transliteration" option, however, which is what we need to convert the weird Word characters to standard equivalent characters. Our attempt to compile the GNU libiconv from source and build PHP against it failed miserably. Any idea where we can get this library or equivalent functionality? Thanks, Greg Frank |

On 21 Mar 2006, 12:02AM CST, Gerhard Gonter <li...@ur...> wrote: > What are the advantages of RPM packaging compared to BFF packaging? In the case of the Toolbox, the advantage for us was that all the software we were interested in redistributing already had SRPM packages that we could just rebuild. This saved us a considerable amount of work. Otherwise, installp is generally the preferred packaging format on AIX. It gives you version dependency/requisite checking ability over the entire OS, whereas with RPM you can only check the versions of other RPM packages (so basically just the Toolbox). > Are there guidelines for porters/packagers, similar to the FreeBSD > porters handbook? Well, there's always Maximum RPM: <http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/>. As far as porting, I'm sure there are a lot of references out there dealing with the idiosynchracies of AIX vs. other platforms.
