They contain classes that started back when Java Generics were a dream and you found your type errors at run-time with class casting errors. The oldest classes in the collection date from 2 decades ago when developing the first Java server deployment onto an IBM ainframe. As a result many classes disappeared over the years as classes offering the same functionality finally appeared in the Java run-time making them obsolete and many of the others have been re-written to use Generics making them more usable and, above all, type safe. -
