On this day in 1924 physicist and silicon transistor pioneer Jean Hoerni was born. Hoerni developed the groundbreaking planar process for manufacturing semiconductor devices. Combined with Robert Noyce’s technique for placing a layer of silicon dioxide on a transistor, this resulted in the creation of the modern integrated circuit.
