Today in Tech – 1959

By Community Team

On this day in 1959 American computer company Control Data Corporation (CDC) released the CDC 1604 computer, the world’s most powerful computer at the time and one of the first commercially successful transistorized computers. It was designed by electrical engineer Seymour Cray and was used in various applications by the US Navy, the US Defense Atomic Support Agency and NASA.

I used a CDC6400 when I was in engineering school 1967-1971. We fed it batch cards. Programmed in Fortran. It was awesome for its time.

These little news stories are great, thank you, but they would be better if, when you click on the “Learn More” link in your email, you actually got more than just the same paragraph with an added picture – nice thought the picture is. Please could you do fuller stories in future? For example, I would like to know some technical specifications, what some examples were of the “various applications” it was used for, etcetera. I’d also love to know what that gold cylinder is in the corner of the photograph! 🙂

I agree with MJ about getting more in-depth information on the subject. When I click the [Learn More] link I’d actually like to learn more. For instance, is there any connection between Seymore Cray and the Cray super computer? Did not the Cray computer hold the record for the world’s fastest computer for several decades?. etc etc etc ….

After leaving Control Data Corporation, Seymour Cray was the founder of Cray Research and designer of the series of Cray computers.
Eventually Seymour wa killed in an auto accident.
