Today in Tech – 2005

On this day in 2005 the Tokyo Stock Exchange experienced its worst software glitch in its history. Problems started from the time the market opened at 9 AM, and delayed the official start of trading until 1:30 PM. This gave the exchange only 90 minutes of operation for the day. The glitch was caused by bugs in a newly installed transactions system that was supposed to help cope with higher trading volumes. It was the most serious halt to hit the exchange since 1999 when operations had to be stopped so an all-electronic trading system could be installed; and is still considered the worst since.
