On this day in 1997 an internet entry won Bob Levey’s Washington Post Neologism contest for the first time ever. The Neologism contest was then a monthly contest posted on Levey’s column. It invited readers of The Washington Post to take any word from the dictionary, alter it slightly, and provide a new definition for it based on a given challenge or situation. At the time Levey challenged readers to create a word to describe a negative reaction to Washington. Scott Burrough’s suggestion, “sqwashington”, arrived via email 11 minutes ahead of an identical entry and won.
