On this day in 2006 the very first tweet was sent out by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. Dorsey was the primary designer of what was then codenamed “twttr”. He had approached then podcast publishing site Odeo with the idea of status messages shared among friends, and the idea quickly gained interest and traction. He alongside Twitter co-founder Biz Stone built a prototype of Twitter in just two weeks, and by March 21, 2006 at exactly 9:50 AM Dorsey sent out the first tweet: “just setting up my twttr.” Not long after Twitter was released to the public and established its own company, Twitter, Inc.

And they called the little messages twitters not tweets but unfortunately the USA english speakers found two syllables difficult.
