On this day in 1993 three of the largest companies in the U.S.– media company Time Warner Inc., cable operator Tele-Communications Inc., and software publisher Microsoft Corp. announced that they would embark on a joint venture that would combine and redefine the worlds of computing, communications and television. The union was to form a company called Cablesoft, and would develop interactive television software that would allow consumers to shop and use the World Wide Web via their home television sets.
