On this day in 1947 computer scientist, mathematician, philosopher, theoretical biologist and WW2 code-breaker Alan Turing delivered a lecture to the London Mathematical Society, wherein he spoke about the eventual rise of machine learning and how it would affect humans. In his talk, which was unpublished until 1986, Turing described how intelligent machines would work and anticipated the debate over the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs.

Turing is widely recognized as the ‘father of modern computing’ for his creativity, vision and many contributions in the fields of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.
