On this day in 1971 the very first warrant to search a computer storage device was issued in San Jose, California. The requirements for such a warrant were similar to those required to search a home. The said warrant led to a conviction for theft of trade secrets, and instigated an era of developing increasingly sophisticated methods of encryption to hide computer files from law enforcement agents.
