On this day in 1987 Larry Wall released the first version of Perl, a general-purpose programming language commonly used as a Unix scripting language. Wall had started working on the language that year while working as a programmer at Unisys, and released version 1.0 to the comp.sources.misc. newsgroup. In the years that followed the language expanded rapidly, and to this day it remains one of the most widely-used programming languages.
