Today in Tech – 1993

On this day in 1993 multinational video game company Nintendo agreed to use Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) technology for a video game system it was developing. Code-named Project Reality, the console was to succeed the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and was announced to be released by the end of 1995. The project was delayed, renamed the Ultra 64 and released as the Nintendo 64 in Japan and North America in 1996, and in Europe and Australia in 1997.

Nintendo’s partnership with SGI though fruitful didn’t stop SGI’s decline, and despite other partnerships SGI continued to struggle with decreasing revenues and leadership changes in later years.
