Today in Tech – 1994

By Community Team

On this day in 1994 Windows 95 programmer Benjamin Slivka suggested to his coworkers via email that a World Wide Web browser be included as a feature for Windows 95. Microsoft took this advice and Internet Explorer 1 debuted a year later as part of the Internet Jumpstart Kit in Microsoft Plus! For Windows 95. By bundling it free of charge with the Windows operating system however, Microsoft did not have to pay royalties to Spyglass Inc., the original creators of the browser. This was viewed as a loss of royalties for Spyglass, and resulted in a lawsuit and an US$8 million settlement.
