As a result of changing electronic messaging and privacy requirements around the world, SourceForge will implement a number of changes that will affect your project. Please review the following carefully and make necessary changes before June 26, 2017.
- SourceForge will stop support for email sending from your Project Web space. That includes all transactional email from systems such a WordPress, Drupal, and similar. Since we also block outbound connections due to past abuse (see documentation here), it will not be possible to use email services such as MailChimp, and thus no way to send email from your project web site. We deeply regret having to bring this functionality to end of life, but since we cannot verify or control this email traffic going out from the sourceforge.net domain, new privacy laws make it impossible to continue the service.
- SourceForge will make a number of changes to project mailing lists:
- All mailing list subscribers at sourceforge.net projects where mailing lists are currently active, as defined by “any mailing list having sent email in the past three years”, will receive a notice to confirm their country of residence and willingness to receive email in the future. This serves as our legal record required by various jurisdictions.
- All mailing lists that haven’t been active in the past 3 years will be closed. Subscriber lists of these mailing lists will be scrubbed from our systems.
- All mailing list subscribers who do not reconfirm their subscription via an email they will receive from SourceForge will be unsubscribed from mailing lists. Their old contributions to mailing lists will remain in place.
- Projects will no longer be able to upload lists of subscribers, nor will they be able to view subscriber emails. Individual users can still subscribe or unsubscribe to mailing lists and change their preferences as before.
- We are making these adjustments to comply with new electronic messaging and privacy laws and hope you will not be inconvenienced. If you have any questions and/or need further help making these adjustments please email sfnet_ops@slashdotmedia.com.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support,
The SourceForge Team
Additional documentation for CMS users:
If your website on Project Web relies on email sending, such as user registration verification, forgot password function, generic alerts and such, you will need to make adjustments. Please visit your CMS’ backend and documentation to be sure your site will continue to work as expected. Some pointers (not exhaustive, but a decent start):
WordPress
Visit these admin pages and adjust as necessary:
wp-admin/options-general.php – turn off anyone can register
wp-admin/options-discussion.php
Drupal
Visit these admin pages and adjust as necessary:
admin/config/people/accounts
admin/config/system/actions
Will it still be possible for Project Web MediaWiki to send e-mail to local sourceforce user e-mail addresses? I mean, these are not outbound (apart from any forwarded e-mail). Otherwise it means a lot more administration, changing passwords for people, etc.
