If you’re a knowledgeable Windows user or developer, you may wonder about just what processes your computer is running. Process Hacker is a process viewer for Windows, similar to the commercial Sysinternals Process Explorer, but Process Hacker gives you a higher level of control over processes. Version 1.5 was released late last month.
According to its developer, who goes by the handle wj32, you can search for hidden processes, inject or unload DLLs, view and destroy heaps, and even detach processes from debuggers. In recent releases wj32 has added 64-bit support and improved the user interface.
The Process Hacker driver bypasses almost all security software and rootkits, making the software useful for fighting malware. And wj32 says Process Hacker has more features than just about any other process viewer. The project typically makes a new release every three to four weeks, to fix bugs and get new features out as soon as possible.
Process Hacker is a useful tool for anyone interested in Windows system internals. wj32 says its ability to edit memory can be useful for debugging – and maybe also for cheating in games!
