June Project of the Month: OpenNMS

By

OpenNMS was one of the first open source network management tools to host on SourceForge, and this month we’re recognizing it as June’s Project of the Month. Under development since 1999, OpenNMS has grown from a spark of an idea to a full-blown platform used by huge companies like Papa John’s Pizza and Rackspace Managed Hosting.

OpenNMS’s lead developers say one of the biggest challenges they’ve faced “has been convincing people that a free and open source software solution can be as good as a commercial solution costing millions of dollars. There seems to be this myth that hidden, private software development is somewhat superior to that done in a free and open manner.”

Check out what the team says was their biggest surprise, where the project is headed from here, and what book every project lead should read right now, over at OpenNMS’s Project of the Month page. Congratulations to the terrific and dedicated team behind OpenNMS!
