On this day in 1965 the very first PhD dissertation in Computer Science was presented by Richard L. Wexelblat, a former computer scientist who henceforth earned the first degree in Computer Science. While many others had performed computer-related work, Wexelblat was the first to complete his doctoral dissertation at a formally recognized Computer Science program at the University of Pennsylvania. Wexelblat went on to author ‘History of Programming Languages’, before leaving the computer field to become an artisanal woodturner.
