Today in Tech – 1990

By Community Team

On this day in 1990 the Internet Movie Database or more popularly known as IMDb was launched. IMDb was originally known as the “rec.arts.movies movie database” and contained various lists of movies, television series and the actors and actresses appearing in them. By the late 1990s the lists became quite expansive, leading original creator and CEO Colin Needham, who was working as an engineer for HP at the time, to develop and post a collection of Unix shell scripts that could be used to search the lists, thus creating the database that is now the IMDb.

I remember it from the early days 🙂 How did the IMDb come to be hosted for so long at my alma mater Mississippi State University? Why and when was it moved from there to its current site?
