Game overview and premise
Wuthering Waves is a free-to-play, open-world action RPG from Kuro Games. You play as Rover, an amnesiac protagonist who awakens in a dystopian, futuristic world and must piece together their lost history. Along the way, you recruit a cast of characters called Resonators to support you in combat and exploration. The title uses a gacha monetization model with a pity mechanic that guarantees a high-rarity reward after a set number of pulls, and its design emphasizes combat encounters more than some other open-world gacha titles.
Narrative setup and companion types
The campaign begins with Rover emerging from a lengthy slumber into a ruined future and slowly uncovering clues about their identity and the world. Resonators accompany the protagonist, each filling distinct combat roles. At launch (version 1.0) there are 17 available Resonators organized into elemental/role groupings, for example:
- Fusion
- Spectro
- Aero
- Glacio
- Havoc
- Electro
Visuals, audio, and combat feel
Wuthering Waves presents a polished 3D world with detailed animations and long draw distances that keep distant scenery visible at high quality. The strong animation and sound design enhance the game's combat, making battles feel responsive and satisfying. While exploration is supported by the open-world layout, the developers clearly prioritize fast-paced, skill-driven encounters.
Many systems—collectible characters, tiered rarities, elemental interactions—will feel familiar to players of other gacha titles. Still, the smooth animation, impactful sound effects, and combat emphasis give the game its own appeal.
What’s new in Version 2.6
Version 2.6, titled By Sun's Scourge, By Moon's Revelation, adds two major story chapters and a new highland region:
- Chapter II Act IX: By Moon's Fated Light centers on a celebratory ceremony led by Ceremonial Officer Bruno.
- Chapter II Act VIII: By Sun's Burning Hand sends players to recover the Sentinel Imperator’s lost relic and confront the Dark Tide.
The update introduces the Sanguis Plateaus, a rugged highland that doubles as both hunting grounds and a frontline against invading forces. New activities and time-limited events on the plateaus include:
- Sanguis Plateaus Travel Atlas (featured event)
- Prints of Plateaus (photo-collection event)
- Hunt of Ash and Steel (exploration event)
Two new five-star Resonators join the roster in this patch, along with fresh Phantom Echoes:
- Iuno — Aero / Gauntlets (support/healer)
- Augusta — Electro / Broadblade (primary damage dealer)
- Fallacy of No Return (new Phantom Echo)
- Kerasaur (new Phantom Echo)
Performance tweaks and quality-of-life changes in this release aim to smooth gameplay and stability for returning players.
Final impressions
Wuthering Waves delivers an atmospheric post-apocalyptic journey with high production values, especially in visuals, animation, and sound. While many of its systems will feel recognizable to fans of Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, or Arknights, the title’s combat-first approach and strong presentation make it a compelling option for players who enjoy character-driven gacha RPGs.
