Quick snapshot of the game
Wuthering Waves is a free-to-play, open-world action RPG from Kuro Games. You play as Rover, an amnesiac protagonist exploring a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world while piecing together their lost memories. Throughout the journey you recruit allies called Resonators, and progression leans on a gacha system—complete with a pity mechanic that guarantees rewards after a set number of pulls. Compared with similar titles, Wuthering Waves places a stronger emphasis on combat rather than purely on exploration.
Narrative and companions
Rover awakens after a long sleep to find the world drastically changed. The main story follows their search for identity and the fragments of the past that emerge with each mission. Allies come in the form of Resonators, which are grouped by elemental or combat archetypes, including:
- Spectro
- Glacio
- Fusion
- Havoc
- Electro
- Aero
At launch (Version 1.0) the roster included 17 Resonators. The game’s structure blends character collection, story progression, and open-world exploration.
Presentation, sound, and gameplay feel
Wuthering Waves features detailed 3D visuals with long draw distances and fluid animations, lending realism to environments and combat alike. High-quality sound design and effects complement the visuals, making combat encounters more satisfying. While the game borrows familiar systems—such as character tiers, elemental interactions, and an amnesiac lead meeting collectible allies—its smooth animation and a combat-first design help it stand apart from close peers.
What arrived in Version 2.6
Version 2.6, titled By Sun's Scourge, By Moon's Revelation, added several substantial pieces of content and quality-of-life improvements:
- Chapter II Act IX: By Moon's Fated Light — a chapter centered on celebratory events, including a ceremony led by Ceremonial Officer Bruno.
- Chapter II Act VIII: By Sun's Burning Hand — a mission arc focused on recovering a lost Sentinel relic and confronting the Dark Tide menace in Rinascita.
- New region — the Sanguis Plateaus, a highland frontier that serves both as a hunting ground and a defensive line against hostile forces.
- Exploration and event additions — including the “Sanguis Plateaus Travel Atlas” featured event, the “Hunt of Ash and Steel” exploration activity, and the photo-collection challenge “Prints of Plateaus,” each offering rewards for participation.
- Two new five-star Resonators — Iuno (Aero, Gauntlets), who fills a supportive and healing role, and Augusta (Electro, Broadblade), a primary damage dealer.
- Two fresh Phantom Echoes — Fallacy of No Return and Kerasaur. The update also included performance tweaks and gameplay refinements aimed at delivering smoother play for long-term fans.
Final impressions
Wuthering Waves provides an engaging post-apocalyptic adventure with polished visuals, tight combat, and addictive gacha progression. Although many of its underlying systems and character-collection mechanics will feel familiar to players of other prominent titles, its combat focus, presentation, and audio design make it a compelling alternative for those seeking a more action-oriented open-world gacha experience.
