Overview of the game world and access
Warframe drops you into a moody, high-tech setting for a challenging third-person cooperative shooter. The current beta is free to join and supports squads of up to four players (you plus three teammates). In this build you’ll be fighting alien forces across space environments, with matchmaking that can automatically pair you with partners or let you play solo or with friends.
Recommended alternative: Resident Evil — Revisited Mod (free). A different take if you prefer a survival-horror twist with stylized combat.
Playable Warframes (characters)
- Volt — an electricity-focused frame that excels at mobility and blunt-force offensive options.
- Loki — specializes in trickery and disorienting foes to gain tactical advantages.
- Excalibur — a well-rounded combatant who makes good use of thrown weapons and balanced weaponry.
This beta includes three selectable frames; the full release is expected to offer around a dozen choices, each altering both appearance and combat role. All frames can use firearms and assault rifles, but every frame also brings unique abilities and weapon sets.
How missions and progression work
- Fight through waves of alien foes while pursuing mission goals.
- Disable reactors, sabotage systems, or accomplish other destructive objectives.
- Rescue NPCs and complete side tasks to gain additional rewards.
Players pick missions from an in-game map. Completing runs awards experience and currency that unlock new regions and more challenging contracts. If you want to accelerate progression, there is an in-game store where purchases of items and currency are possible.
Combat, controls, and enemy behavior
The camera defaults to a shoulder-mounted view similar to Mass Effect, but you can reposition it with the mouse. Controls are responsive and let you aim and fire with minimal fuss. Cover mechanics allow you to hide behind structures when under heavy fire.
Enemy AI attacks aggressively and can feel dangerous, though their tactics are somewhat predictable after repeated encounters. Each Warframe has a protective shield that soaks up light damage; if that shield breaks and you suffer too much damage you’ll go down and need a teammate to revive you. A limited self-revive option exists, so use it sparingly.
Visuals, performance, and audio
Even at high resolutions the game runs smoothly for the most part, with only occasional stutters while sprinting. Character models are visually distinctive—somewhat reminiscent of a neon, Tron-like aesthetic—while many environments can feel repetitive, differing mainly in color palettes rather than layout. The soundtrack complements the action and helps sell the atmosphere.
Summary and outlook
Warframe delivers brisk, entertaining cooperative action with solid shooting mechanics and a striking character design. Its repetitive mission variety can blunt the experience over long sessions, but ongoing developer updates and added content are likely to expand variety and replay value. For fans of fast-paced cooperative shooters, this beta is an enjoyable preview of what the finished product could become.
