A fresh kind of narrative puzzle

Storyteller turns tale-making into a playful puzzle: it hands you the tools to invent stories from scratch rather than follow a prewritten script. Created by Daniel Benmergui in partnership with Annapurna Interactive, the game stands apart from more scripted narrative experiences (for example, Overboard or Lost in Play) by letting players shape plots entirely on their own terms.

Core gameplay loop

At its heart, Storyteller is an interactive sandbox for writing through gameplay. You’re given a blank book-like canvas and a set of scenes; arranging characters and moments determines how events unfold in real time. The interface is designed to be simple and tactile so the focus stays on imagination, not menus.

  • Adventure, intrigue, and other tonal choices let you steer the mood.
  • Magic and romantic beats are available to flavor your plots.
  • A palette of themes encourages experimentation across genres.

Characters and narrative building blocks

The game supplies a cast of archetypes and fantastic figures you can place into scenes. Characters respond dynamically to their context and to one another, producing surprising outcomes as you test different pairings and placements.

  • Witches and shapeshifters add supernatural twists.
  • Royal figures and rulers provide political or dramatic stakes.
  • Enchanted beasts and talking animals introduce whimsy and conflict.

Story tools and mechanics

Creating compelling arcs comes from combining a few simple mechanics with imaginative choices. Drag-and-drop storyboarding lets you reposition characters, provoke encounters, and set up classic motifs that lead to unexpected resolutions. The system also offers gentle hints and examples to help you learn storytelling techniques without forcing a single “right” method.

  • Plot devices such as secrets, reversals, and mysteries are available to deepen scenes.
  • Clear visual cues and sample scenarios speed up the learning curve.
  • Familiar motifs — duels, transformations, hidden clues — are built into the toybox for quick experimentation.

Progression, secrets, and replay value

Beyond finishing individual books, Storyteller layers incentives that reward curiosity. Hidden outcomes and achievement-like discoveries encourage replaying scenarios with different combinations to reveal alternate endings and rare storylets. Completing a volume earns in-game recognition that celebrates your creative skill.
