Sonic Origins is a modern compilation that brings four of the early Sonic platformers together, polished for contemporary systems with updated visuals and new presentation elements. Each title has been cleaned up for higher-resolution displays and receives its own refreshed opening and closing animation sequences.

Game modes and unlockable content

The compilation offers several ways to play each game, from faithful recreations to enhanced versions that change gameplay and presentation.

Key play options and features:

• Story Mode — plays the four games in sequence and inserts brand-new animated cutscenes to connect them.
• Anniversary Mode — widescreen support and a lives-free experience for uninterrupted runs.
• Classic Mode — the original experience preserved in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
• Extra modes — boss rush, mirror runs, and a mission-based mode that reward players with in-game currency.
• Museum and shop — spend collected coins on archival content or additional attempts in special stages.

Earning coins through challenges and modes unlocks museum exhibits and other bonus material. Several of these extras and some extended content are available only through paid DLC.

Paid expansions and limitations

Not all of the new content is included in the base purchase. There are downloadable expansions that add features and alternate versions of stages and characters; these require separate payment. Be aware that some desirable additions are gated behind this paid content instead of being unlocked through in-game progression alone.

Verdict — should you pick it up?

If you love classic Sonic, Origins is worth considering: it consolidates four foundational titles into a single package, updates the visuals, and introduces fresh modes and interstitial storytelling. However, expect some features to be available only via extra purchases, and for the best experience you'll want a capable device or console. If you prefer a purely retro, low-cost alternative with new levels and tight platforming, consider a dedicated retro-style Sonic release instead.
