Game overview
Sonic Mania is a contemporary take on the classic 2D Sonic games from the early 1990s. Built as a love letter to the series, it restores the pixel-art look and high-speed platforming of the originals while adding fresh touches to level design, visuals, and movement. The title launched in August 2017 to celebrate Sonic’s 25th anniversary and was developed in collaboration with SEGA and independent teams.

Is it a remake or a reimagining?
Sonic Mania is best described as a reimagining rather than a straight remake. It uses many of the same stages, themes, and musical motifs from the classic titles, but levels have been reworked with new routes, obstacles, and mechanics that weren’t present in the 1991 game. The goal was to evoke nostalgia while offering something new for both longtime fans and newcomers.
Core gameplay and new mechanics
Sonic Mania keeps the fast-paced, momentum-driven platforming fans expect, and layers in several modern refinements:
- A widescreen camera that reveals more of the environment ahead, making reactions to hazards easier.
- Faster, snappier jumps and overall movement physics tuned for a modern feel.
- New moves such as the drop dash: perform a jump and press down during the descent to instantly burst into a rolling/spindash attack on impact.
- Reworked level elements: brighter palettes, alternate routes, new traps, and additional puzzle-like sections.
Local multiplayer
- Two-player cooperative play is available locally: players share a single screen and alternate lead/follow roles during runs.
- Online multiplayer is not supported; all cooperative sessions require players to be in the same room.
- In multiplayer, each participant controls a distinct character with individual abilities that affect traversal and exploration.
What Sonic Mania Plus adds
Sonic Mania Plus builds on the original release with enhancements and extras:
- Two new playable characters — Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel — who appear in main stages and bonus rounds.
- Expanded multiplayer options, including up to four players in split-screen competitive modes.
- Performance fixes and frame-rate improvements, notably in the 3D bonus stages for smoother gameplay.
- New stage content, such as Angel Island Zone with rope-swinging sections, and alternate bonus minigames like a ping-pong-style challenge unlocked after reaching checkpoints with 50 rings.
- Cosmetic options in Encore Mode that let you swap background palettes and time-of-day looks.
- A physical boxed edition is available for Plus, whereas the original release was primarily distributed digitally.
Why many players enjoy Sonic Mania
- It channels the original games’ momentum-based platforming and snappy controls while introducing fresh level design.
- Pixel-art visuals and energetic animations evoke nostalgia without feeling stale.
- A dynamic soundtrack that matches the pacing of stages and helps tie levels together.
- A mix of familiar and novel challenges: springboards, swinging bars, magnetic and bouncy elements, and new boss encounters keep sessions engaging.
How it compares to other platformers
- If you prefer speed-focused, precision platforming, Sonic Mania is an excellent choice.
- For players who like slower, exploratory design and high-definition open areas (swimming, diving, multiple side activities), Super Mario Odyssey offers a different, more methodical experience.
- Super Mario Odyssey is exclusive to Nintendo Switch; Sonic Mania’s multi-platform availability (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch) makes it accessible to a wider variety of systems.
