Quick summary of the game
Sonic Dash — Endless Running is SEGA’s free behind-the-back runner starring Sonic and a selection of series favorites. Players sprint automatically while using touch gestures to avoid hazards, gather rings, and grab temporary boosts to try and set high scores and climb leaderboards.
How the gameplay works
Sonic runs forward continuously; you swipe to change lanes, leap, or slide beneath obstacles. Rings scattered along the route serve as both score and currency, and special items appear to alter your run. The control scheme relies entirely on touch swipes (left/right to change lanes, up to jump, down to roll); tilt controls are not available.
When the Dash Meter fills from collecting rings, you can trigger Dash, a brief burst of speed that smashes through enemies and barriers. During some runs you’ll reach a gap where Sonic is suspended mid-jump and arrow prompts appear — swiping as indicated produces flashy aerial poses before you land, offering a short break from the main sprint.
Power-ups and pickups
- Protective shields that absorb a hit and keep you running
- Magnetic fields that draw in nearby rings automatically
- The Dash boost, earned by filling the Dash Meter, which increases speed and clears smaller hazards
Rings are used both for scoring and to charge the Dash Meter; special red star rings function as a premium in-game currency for certain unlocks.
Boss encounters and special challenges
Periodic boss sequences pit Sonic against series villains like Dr. Eggman. These segments require you to dodge ground hazards while timing mid-air attacks to deal damage. Boss encounters add variety to standard runs and test both reflexes and timing.
Playable characters and in-game shop
A rotating roster of characters is available, some unlocked through gameplay currency and others via purchases.
- Premium characters such as Metal Sonic and Sir Lancelot are offered in the store (these often require real-money purchases).
- Playable cast members like Blaze, Rouge, Cream, and Silver can be unlocked using red star rings.
- Limited-time skins and cosmetics occasionally appear as special offers.
Red star rings can be obtained by playing promoted apps, buying them from the store, or through other in-game promotions.
Related release: a recent spin-off
A new iteration, Sonic Prime Dash, launched alongside the second season of Sonic Prime (released July 13, 2023). It borrows the same run-and-collect mechanics but features Sonic Prime-themed skins and requires a Netflix subscription. That title is free to download for subscribers and promises an experience without ads or microtransactions.
Final impressions
Sonic Dash is a satisfying pick for franchise fans: familiar endless-runner mechanics are enhanced by character-based touches, flashy aerial animations, and occasional boss fights that break up the repetition. While it forgoes tilt controls, the responsive swipe gestures and collectible-driven progression keep the gameplay engaging and competitive.
