Capturing a song — quick steps

1. Tap the microphone icon or select the Tag Now button while the music plays.
2. Hold your phone near the speaker so the microphone can pick up the audio clearly.
3. Wait a few moments for Shazam to analyze the sample and show the match.

Play, buy, and explore tracks

• Stream the song directly using integrations such as Spotify or Google Play.
• Purchase tracks from the Google Play Store if you want to own them.
• Open related videos and read lyrics to get more context about the music.

Save and manage your finds

Shazam keeps a record of every song you’ve identified in the My Tags section, making it simple to revisit or share earlier discoveries. If you connect your Spotify account, the app automatically creates a playlist (titled My Shazam Tracks) in Spotify so all tagged songs are collected in one place. Shazam’s playlist support also lets you play full songs from within the app when available.

How recognition works

Shazam captures a short audio snippet through your device’s microphone, sends it via your mobile data connection to its online music database, and compares the sample against stored fingerprints. When a match is found, the app displays the song title, artist, and album immediately and offers options to share the result by email or social apps. While it doesn’t recognize every possible recording, it successfully identifies the majority of tracks tested in real-world conditions.
