Rainlendar is a compact, highly tweakable desktop calendar that stays out of the way while keeping your schedule and notes accessible. If you want a different free option, consider iCalendar Lite as a recommended alternative.

Look and feel: widget-like interface

On first launch you’ll notice a widget-inspired layout. The app’s calendar, event list and note panes appear to float on the desktop, similar to small gadgets that display weather, stocks or the clock. These elements are unobtrusive, easy to move, and can be hidden or shown instantly.

Personalization and third-party connections

Where Rainlendar shines is its flexible interface and quick note/event entry. It ships with only a couple of built-in themes, but includes a link to customize.org where you can download many more styles. You can also assign hotkeys to summon or control the app and enable plug-ins to sync with other tools such as Outlook and iCalendar.

Practical usage and accessibility

The program lives in the system tray for fast access — a single click brings it forward. If you find the default Windows calendar uninspiring, this gives you an attractive, customizable alternative that integrates neatly with your desktop.

Installation quirks and skin setup

The program’s extensive theming options come with a manual step: installing additional skins isn’t automatic. To add a downloaded skin you need to copy it into Rainlendar’s Skins folder and then select it via the Edit Skin option in the app’s menu. That process is simple but not as streamlined as some users might expect.

Recent fixes and bug notes

  • Google calendar entries are now listed as targets only when events or tasks have actually been fetched from the server.
  • Due dates for Google Tasks no longer shift back a day because of timezone conversions.
  • A visible edit control that remained after the window was hidden (which produced a tiny black dot on the desktop) has been corrected.
  • Line breaks in task descriptions are now saved properly to Google Tasks.
