Story summary

Project I.G.I.: I'm Going In casts you as David Llewellyn Jones, a former SAS operative sent alone to foil a rogue ex-Russian colonel’s plan to detonate a nuclear device over parts of Europe. The campaign is told mostly through in-engine cutscenes that open and close missions, and the plot drives Jones into a series of covert infiltrations across Eastern Europe as he gathers intelligence and sabotages the enemy’s infrastructure.

How missions are structured

Missions are large, open-ended scenarios split into several smaller objectives so single-player progress stays manageable. The game heavily rewards stealth and careful planning rather than nonstop firefights: players must bypass patrols, deactivate cameras and alarms, and use observation to pick the best routes. Levels emphasize reconnaissance, lockpicking and electronic tampering as much as direct engagement.

Stealth, AI and combat balance

Enemy forces try to behave like military units—searching, setting up perimeters and reacting to disturbances—but their behavior can be inconsistent. A few well-placed shots can end Jones’s mission quickly, so conserving health and avoiding detection are critical. Because Jones operates solo, success usually depends on patience, timing and exploiting surveillance blind spots rather than charging in with overwhelming firepower.

Weapons, gear and gadgets

Jones has access to an array of realistic firearms and mission tools. Notable items include:

  • Dragunov sniper rifle for long-range eliminations
  • MP5 submachine gun for close-quarters engagements
  • Desert Eagle handgun for high-damage sidearm shots
  • Glock 17 as a reliable, standard pistol
  • Fragmentation grenades for clearing rooms and destroying vehicles
  • Flashbangs to disorient enemies without lethal force

Additional equipment includes a combat knife, an antitank launcher for armored threats, NATO-standard spy electronics, binoculars with night vision, a digital compass, and a Map computer that displays objectives and a live satellite recon feed while recording radio traffic from Jones’s handler, Anya.

Visuals and audio

For its era the title delivered impressive textures and weapon models, detailed outdoor terrain and immersive environmental effects—gates grinding, motors humming, and elevators chiming. Weapon and explosion sounds are forceful and believable, enhancing the sense of presence during both stealthy approaches and sudden firefights.

Criticisms and gameplay drawbacks

Despite strengths in atmosphere and scope, Project I.G.I. has some notable shortcomings: enemy AI can be buggy or unpredictable in certain situations; there is no mid-mission quicksave option; and the experience is limited to single-player with no multiplayer support. The health system is unforgiving—Jones can be incapacitated by only a few hits, and healing requires finding medical syringes in the environment rather than regenerating automatically.

Overall impression and influence

Project I.G.I. stands out as an early attempt at a realistic, lone-operator tactical shooter that emphasizes strategy and stealth over run-and-gun mechanics. While imperfect in execution, its combination of large mission spaces, believable weapon behavior and gadget-driven play left a memorable impression for fans of methodical, single-player military action.
