Overview
Microsoft’s Outlook Express for Macintosh is a legacy email client that lets you handle messages, manage an address book and take part in newsgroups. Keep in mind this package targets older Mac hardware and operating systems; it is not designed for Intel-based Macs running Mac OS X (10.0+) or later.
System compatibility
This download is intended exclusively for Macintosh PowerPC systems running Mac OS 8.1 through 9.x. It will not run on Intel Macs or on macOS versions beginning with OS X 10.0.
Download file options
- BinHex (.hqx): typically larger in file size but offers better compatibility with very early Mac operating systems (for example Mac OS 7.0, 8.0 and 8.5).
- MacBinary (.bin): usually yields a smaller download but can be less reliable on some of the oldest Macintosh system releases.
Choose the format that best matches the age of the Mac OS you plan to install onto.
Recent fixes and additions
- Security updates: previous vulnerabilities found in Outlook Express 5 have been addressed and resolved.
- Webmail support: added compatibility for MSN Web Mail accounts so those services can be accessed from the client.
Paid alternatives and recommendations
If you need a modern, supported mail client for current Mac hardware and macOS releases, consider purchasing a contemporary email application that receives regular updates and security patches. Look for software that supports POP/IMAP, modern authentication methods, and active developer support.
