Introducing Correo — a Camino-inspired mail client
Correo is an open-source email program that combines Mozilla components with a user interface influenced by Camino. Still in early development (version 0.3), it aims to be a lightweight alternative for Mac users who want a Camino-style experience in a mail client.
Key capabilities
- Multi-column message view and a Camino-inspired toolbar and controls
- Support for multiple accounts, including POP and IMAP
- Attach files to outgoing messages and open individual emails in separate windows
- Built on Mozilla code yet styled to feel familiar to Camino users
- Uses the Mac Keychain so you can apply certificates for encrypted mail
- Integrates with the Mac Address Book for contacts syncing
Platform support and integrations
Correo already runs on Leopard and hooks into several macOS services. It can access the system Address Book and leverages Keychain for secure certificate storage, enabling encrypted messaging when you have the proper credentials.
Limitations and stability concerns
While the feature set is promising, Correo is not yet reliable enough for heavy daily use. Users have reported random crashes and intermittent problems with IMAP handling. Given its early 0.3 status, expect bugs and occasional instability.
Verdict
Correo shows potential as an alternative to Apple Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird on the Mac, especially for users who prefer a Camino-like interface. However, until the developers improve stability and fix IMAP-related issues, it remains better suited for testing and experimentation than for mission-critical email.
