Availability update and upgrade guidance
Important: Office Home & Student 2016 is no longer offered for download. If you attempt to use the Download link for that edition, you will be sent to the current Home & Student release instead. You can also choose the Premium options or subscribe to Office 365 (now Microsoft 365) to access the latest productivity tools, which are compatible with Windows 11.
What the current suite installs
When you install Microsoft’s modern Office package for Windows, the applications are bundled together rather than provided individually. After setup, you can expect the following apps to be installed on your machine:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- OneNote
- Access
- Publisher
- Visio
- Project
- OneDrive
Note: You cannot run Office 2013 and Office 2016 side-by-side on the same computer, so plan upgrades on shared or work machines accordingly.
Interface and collaboration improvements
The visual design of Word remains familiar to users of the previous release, but with a slightly more vibrant color scheme and small reorganizations of icons on the Ribbon. Two features stand out:
- A context-aware “Tell Me” command box that can perform tasks for you (for example, typing “comment” can insert a comment automatically instead of only showing instructions). This functionality is available in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Real-time co-authoring, which displays other contributors’ edits as they happen on the screen — a capability that Office Online already provided.
Other usability tweaks include an in-app Store for third-party add-ons, simplified Save As locations, and linking cloud accounts like OneDrive to specific email addresses to reduce confusion with on-premises accounts. Also, Lync has been rebranded and replaced by Skype for Business.
Data, charts, and business intelligence upgrades in Excel
Excel’s interface looks much the same at first glance, but Microsoft has bolstered its analytics features by integrating previously separate BI tools. These enhancements target users who handle larger datasets and need self-service reporting:
- Pareto & Histogram
- Box & Whisker
- Waterfall
- Sunburst
- TreeMap
Integrated tools such as Power Query (for easier data discovery without IT assistance) and Power View (for interactive reporting) are now part of the package. Another small convenience is the ability to attach files directly from OneDrive.
Security, accessibility, and IT deployment
Many of the most important changes are behind the scenes: greater protection for sensitive data, improved accessibility options, and deployment tools aimed at IT administrators. These updates are not always visible to end users, but they help harden environments and simplify rollouts across organizations.
Conclusion
Most of the visible tweaks in this Office release are modest — the “Tell Me” feature and the collaborative editing receive the most attention from everyday users. For power users, particularly those relying on Excel for BI tasks, the built-in analytics and charting additions represent meaningful progress. If you need the older Home & Student 2016 package, plan to move to the current edition or to Microsoft 365 for ongoing support and new features.
