movisensXS — modern ambulatory research app
movisensXS is an Android application from movisens GmbH built for ambulatory assessment. It supports studies that gather data as participants go about their everyday routines, using momentary sampling approaches (often called experience sampling or ecological momentary assessment) to capture responses and measurements in real time.
What it can record
- Physiological signals (when paired with compatible sensors)
- Passive traces of behavior and app usage
- Short, in-the-moment self-reports prompted by the study protocol
These options let researchers combine real-time questionnaires with objective device- and sensor-based measurements.
Permissions and how data are handled
The app requests a range of device permissions so it can record the types of behavioral and physiological data required by a study. movisensXS is designed to protect participant privacy: data are stored in a pseudonymized form and studies are not permitted to collect information that directly identifies an individual. Researchers must follow these restrictions when designing and running assessments.
Accessibility functionality and when it’s used
movisensXS can make use of Android Accessibility services for specific study needs, for example to support participants with disabilities or to monitor which apps are active for a given protocol. This capability is turned off by default and is only enabled for studies that explicitly require it; participants are informed in advance when Accessibility access will be activated.
Related tools you might consider
If you’re exploring other mobile tools for research or related use-cases, one commonly suggested consumer app is “Voice Changer for Phone Call” (free). It serves very different purposes than movisensXS but may be of interest for projects involving audio manipulation or call-based experiments.
