Overview
If you enjoy photographing landscapes, events, or city skylines and have wondered how your shots would look as a single wide panorama, Microsoft Image Composite Editor (ICE) can do that for you. ICE is a free Windows program that stitches multiple photos — or frames from video — into seamless panoramic images. It also includes a range of additional photo tools that can help both newcomers and experienced photographers improve their results.
Core capabilities
ICE automatically aligns and blends source images using advanced stitching algorithms, choosing the best projection for the scene (planar, cylindrical, or spherical). It also provides tools to adjust orientation and tweak the panorama’s perspective manually. Other notable capabilities:
- Automatic removal of lens vignette artifacts
- Cropping tools that help maximize the usable image area
- Optional completion of missing regions, such as sky or ground fills
- Support for a variety of camera motions and shooting techniques
These features make ICE useful for casual panoramas as well as for high-end, large-scale projects.
Advanced and high-resolution support
For very large projects, ICE handles Gigapixel-scale panoramas and can work with image sets captured on a regular grid (for example, with a Gigapan rig). It supports stitching from both stills and video frames, and it can produce professional-quality output without artificial size limits on the final image.
Export options and online sharing
ICE gives you several choices for saving and publishing your panoramas. Export and publish options include:
- Layered Photoshop (PSD) files
- PNG and TIFF image formats
- JPEG for standard export
- Deep Zoom and HD View for tiled/zoomable presentation
You can also upload panoramas directly to online services for sharing.
Supported platforms and system requirements
Because ICE is discontinued, the exact system compatibility depends on the version you obtain:
- Windows 8.1
- Windows 7
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP (supported up through certain older ICE releases)
Later versions were optimized for 64-bit systems and will run best on modern 64-bit Windows installations, but you may need to locate a specific build that works with an older OS if required.
Is ICE included in Microsoft 365?
No — ICE is not part of Microsoft 365 and hasn’t been maintained by Microsoft. Microsoft 365 does include a few apps with basic image-editing features, but it does not provide a dedicated, full-featured stitching tool like ICE. If you subscribe to Microsoft 365, check the plan details to confirm which productivity and media apps are included. Microsoft 365 plans are generally available in the following tiers:
- Enterprise
- Business
- Family
- Personal
If you need professional image-editing software that isn’t provided via Microsoft 365, you’ll typically need to purchase a separate license for those applications.
Suggested alternative
Photosynth (free) is commonly recommended as an alternative for creating and sharing panoramas, especially if you prefer a web-friendly or simplified workflow. Depending on your needs — casual panoramas versus large, print-quality mosaics — you may want to try both ICE (if you can find a compatible installer) and other modern panorama tools to see which fits your workflow best.
