Product snapshot
MelonDS is a free Nintendo DS emulator for desktop computers that aims to reproduce the dual-screen handheld experience. It lets you run many DS titles on your PC so you can revisit classics from that era. The project is still being refined, so occasional bugs can occur, but the emulator already delivers a dependable baseline of features for playable sessions.
Main technical strengths
- Uses a JIT (just-in-time) recompiler to speed up emulation, improving performance on modern hardware.
- Accurate audio emulation that helps preserve original game soundtracks and effects.
- Flexible display controls, including options to change screen size, orientation, and placement.
- Core CPU and GPU emulation components are implemented, enabling most games to run correctly.
- Support for saving and loading game progress so you can resume where you left off.
- Gamepad and joystick compatibility to let you use external controllers instead of the keyboard.
How to install and run
MelonDS is distributed as a portable application, so there’s no installer. To start using it:
- Extract the downloaded archive to a folder of your choice.
- Launch the executable directly from that folder to access the emulator immediately.
Because it’s portable, you can move the folder between computers without repeating an installation process.
Files you must supply
To play games you’ll need your own game dumps (ROMs) or system files obtained from a Nintendo DS/3DS device. MelonDS does not include copyrighted game or console files, so you must provide these legal backups yourself. Failure to supply the required files will prevent most titles from running.
Features planned for future releases
- Wi‑Fi/network support to enable online connectivity and local multiplayer.
- GBA cartridge slot emulation for games that make use of Game Boy Advance add‑ons.
- Support for emulating DSi hardware and its specific features.
These additions are on the roadmap and will expand compatibility and multiplayer options when completed.
Interface and usability
On startup the emulator presents a simple, no-frills interface with a small set of menus for common tasks. The layout keeps configuration and game loading straightforward, making it approachable for users who want a lightweight emulator without a steep learning curve.
Recommendation
If you’re nostalgic for DS games and want a lightweight, actively developed emulator for PC, MelonDS is a solid choice. It already offers the essentials for smooth play and continues to gain new capabilities. If you plan to use it, make sure you have the required game/system files extracted from hardware you own and be prepared for occasional issues while the project is still being improved.
