Measure Killer is a free Windows utility that streamlines Power BI and Microsoft Fabric datasets by identifying and removing unused objects. It inspects dataset metadata (not the underlying data) and helps shrink models so refreshes run faster and resource consumption drops in Premium-capacity environments.

How it connects and inspects

• Uses an XMLA endpoint to connect to datasets so models remain in the service while only metadata is examined.
• Analyzes report and dataset definitions without querying row-level data, avoiding exposure of actual data while still finding redundant artifacts.

• Generates M expressions that can be used to drop unused columns, lowering RAM requirements.
• Offers an automated cleanup for unused measures and also produces a C# script for manual removals via Tabular Editor.
• Produces a tenant-wide summary that flags reports using custom visuals or report-level measures and provides per-dataset/report details like page counts and visuals.
• Exports a detailed Excel workbook for every scanned report, listing artifacts such as measures, visuals, and column usage.
• Creates visual summaries (charts) showing counts of used versus unused measures and columns to make optimization decisions easier.
